Ryan Bernal Hard Charges at Western World Opener
PETERSEN MEDIA: Climbing back aboard the TDR backed No. 17 entry for the Western World Championships in Casa Grande, AZ, Ryan Bernal was the Hard Charger on Friday night, before a fuel issue knocked him out of Saturday’s feature event while running ninth in the closing laps.
“We really had a decent weekend, and it’s a huge bummer that we ran out of fuel late in Saturday’s feature,” Ryan Bernal said. “It definitely wasn’t on our guys. It took a little bit to get the track ran in, and then running around Central AZ Raceway w and quite a few of us had issues.”
Kicking the weekend off on Friday night, Bernal timed the NOS Energy Drink/Inland Rigging/JFM backed No. 17 in 14thfastest in qualifying time trials. Finishing fourth in heat race competition, the Hollister, CA native turned Roseville, CA resident locked into the feature event where he rolled off the starting grid from the outside of the ninth row.
Taking the green from 18th, Bernal had his elbows up as he worked around the Central AZ Raceway. Slicing and dicing his way forward, Bernal was able to pick up positions quickly in the 30-lap affair.
Working into the Top-10 in the closing laps, Bernal took the checkered flag in 10th and earned Hard Charger Honors for the night.
Back in action for Saturday night’s finale, Bernal kicked the night off by running second in his qualifier to lock into the Dash as well as the feature event.
Finishing ninth in the Dash, Bernal was set to take the green from the ninth starting position for the 35-lap feature event. After an extensive track re-work, Bernal was set for action and got off to a great start as he battled hard inside the Top-10 on a wicked fast racing surface.
As the race ripped off laps in torrid fashion, Bernal looked to be primed for another Top-10. That is until his entry sputtered and slowed with no fuel just two laps from the finish.
In the end, Bernal was credited with a 20th place finish.
“Just a bit of bad luck on Saturday,” Ryan Bernal said. “Unfortunately, there was a handful of guys who all had issues, and we happened to be one of them. Still, we had a great car all weekend, and I am thankful for all the hard work my guys put in.”
