Joel Myers Jr 10th at Hockett/McMillin Memorial
PETERSEN MEDIA: Spending last week in New Zealand helping his team prepare for the upcoming season, Joel Myers Jr returned to the US to take part in the Hockett/McMillin Memorial at Lucas Oil Speedway with High Limit Racing where he finished 10th during Saturday night’s finale.
“I was really happy with how much speed we had in our Hayward Motorsports car,” Joel Myers Jr said. “Thursday night we had a great qualifying lap, but the heat race inversion mixed with a loaded heat race made things tough. Though we didn’t make the feature that night, we had just as good of a car on Friday and Saturday and came away with two strong finishes.”
After qualifying fifth during Thursday’s opening night and failing to transfer into the feature event aboard the Velocity Engineering/Installtec Inc./RPM Chassis backed No. 19JR, the Sebastopol, CA product got Friday night started by timing in 16th fastest in time trials.
Lining up third in his heat race, Myers Jr finished in the show position and transferred into the feature event where he took the green flag from the 13th starting position.
Moving into 10th as the race came to life, Myers Jr settled in as he let things settle down in front of him. Just before the halfway point of the 30-lapper, Myers Jr began to make some moves as he worked into the ninth position on the 13th lap, before taking over sixth on the 16th lap.
Running in sixth for seven laps, Myers Jr cracked the Top-5 on the 22nd lap as he then began chasing after Tanner Holmes who ran ahead of him in fourth.
When the feature came to a close, Myers Jr took the fifth-place finish and then turned his attention to Saturday night’s finale.
Saturday night qualifiers were set by event points which placed Myers Jr in the second row of qualifier No. 2. Finishing third, Myers Jr locked into the 35-lap Hockett/McMillin Memorial feature event as he took the green flag from the outside of the seventh row.
On the extremely slick Lucas Oil Speedway surface, Myers Jr dropped back to 14th on the race’s second lap before he began the process of working his way towards the Top-10.
Moving into 12th on the fourth lap, ‘Jr’ was in to 11th on the sixth lap as his car continued to come to him with each passing lap.
Holding on to 11th for the majority of the first half of the race, he was able to take over 10th on the 16th lap. Moving into eighth on the 19th lap, Myers Jr slipped back to ninth on the 21st lap as he raced in traffic as rubber was going down on the surface.
Slipping back to 10th on the 27th lap, Myers Jr was able to hold his spot inside the Top-10 as he closed his weekend out with High Limit Racing with a 10th place finish.
