Cole Wakim Nets Top-10 in Winged Debut
PETERSEN MEDIA: Friday night in Watsonville, CA, Cole Wakim made his first laps in a winged sprint car with Josh Ford Motorsports, and adapted quickly as he tallied a ninth place finish in the feature event.
“It was one of those nights where I was just focused on getting comfortable in the winged car, and getting in all my laps,” Cole Wakim said. “We had some good speed, and I honestly had a blast trying it out.”
Wakim and the JFM team checked in at Ocean Speedway on Friday night, and Wakim timed the Quick Change Liquid Energy/Inland Rigging/MPe backed No. 73 entry in 11th fastest in qualifying time trials.
Lining up in the second row of his heat race, Wakim continued to adapt to the winged car now in race mode as he settled into fourth when the green flag dropped. Continuing to hold his own, Wakim’s fourth place finish lined him up in the sixth row for the 30-lap Ocean Sprints feature event.
Coming to green in his first winged feature event, Wakim got off to a rocky start as he fell back to 15th in the race’s early goings. Not deterred by the slow start, the Simi Valley, CA driver settled in and began to work his way forward on the ¼ mile bullring.
Able to work his way back into the Top-10, Wakim got back to ninth in the final laps and posted a Top-10 in his first ever winged sprint car start.
“It was a really good night in the scheme of everything,” Wakim added. “The JFM guys continue to be great to work with, and I am happy we were able to pick up another pretty good finish together.”
