Chiaramonte Has Up and Down Trophy Cup
PETERSEN MEDIA: Spending his weekend in Tulare, CA competing at the 32nd Annual Trophy Cup, Braden Chiaramonte had an up and down weekend that ultimately came to an end with an expiring motor while leading late in the ‘B’ Main.
“I really felt like we had good speed and a good car all weekend,” Braden Chiaramonte said. “Thursday night the track was really fast and there was not much passing, and on Friday we were fast and up front, I just made a few too many mistakes.”
The three-night extravaganza kicked off on Thursday night where Chiaramonte timed in eighth fastest in time trials with 35 cars checked into the pit area. With the inversion in each heat race being eight at this event, the El Cajon, CA driver lined up in the fourth row of his heat.
Unable to move forward on the extremely fast surface, Chiaramonte’s seventh place finish put him in the ninth row of the opening night feature event.
In a very fast-paced race that only saw a couple stoppages, Chiaramonte picked up what he could as he capped the night off with a 15th-place finish.
Right back to work on Friday night, Chiaramonte didn’t time in as well as he ended up 17th overall in the qualifying session. On a track that was much more racy, he was able to advance from his fourth starting position to finish second and then find himself on the front row of the feature event.
Lining up alongside Kaleb Montgomery, Chiaramonte settled into second as the race came to life. Holding down second for the first half of the race, Chiaramonte slipped back to third on the 16th lap before he found himself in fifth on the 17thstanza.
A restart with 10-to-go was unkind to him as he dropped outside of the Top-10 and fell to 11th and as he searched for a way back forward, he slipped back to 17th by the time the race came to an end.
Saturday night was lined up by points, and Chiaramonte got the afternoon kicked off by finishing fourth in his heat race which put him on the pole of the feature event for one final shot of moving into the $10,000-to-win feature event.
From the pole, Chiaramonte was shot out of a cannon on the freshly groomed Thunderbowl Raceway surface. Looking very strong out front, he was well on his way to one of the final six spots up for grabs into the 50-lap feature event. However, with just six laps to go in the race, Chiaramonte experienced an engine failure that saw him slow to a stop and bring his weekend to a close.
“I was happy with how I felt in the ‘B’, and was hoping to continue that speed in the feature,” Chiaramonte said. “Unfortunately, it wasn’t in the cards. After a couple weeks of fighting our 410ci engine, it was great to have things figured out during this last month. Thanks to my dad for all of his hard work, and everyone that helps our team out.”
BY THE NUMBERS: Starts- 27, Wins- 1, Top 5’s- 5, Top 10’s- 12
ON TAP: Chiaramonte will take this weekend off before he heads to Vado Speedway Park in New Mexico on November 13th and 14th.
