Colby Copeland Claims SCCT Speedweek Championship with C&M Motorsports
PETERSEN MEDIA- Taking part in SCCT Speedweek, Colby Copeland and C&M Motorsports were models of consistency as a very strong week was rewarded with the overall Speedweek Championship on the strength of six Top-5’s in seven nights, which also included two podium runs.
“I am really happy with how our week went from start to finish,” Colby Copeland said. “It is a week that I have always enjoyed, and I am really happy we were able to earn the Speedweek Championship.”
Copeland and the C&M Motorsports team were locked in from the moment the first green flag dropped back on the 16th at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, CA. A solid opening night saw the Roseville, CA driver score a fifth-place finish aboard the NOS Energy Drink/Lund Construction/Anrak backed No. 7C entry.
With the tone for the week set, the team checked in at Placerville Speedway on the 17th as Copeland and company were again very strong despite a feature that was plagued with numerous stoppages. When the wild race came to an end, Copeland pocketed a third-place finish as the team then headed for Oregon.
Checking in at Douglas County Dirt Track on Monday night, a track that Copeland has won at in the past, Copeland put on quite the charge after lining up in the 12th starting position. With a very strong car under him, Copeland worked his way into the Top-5 and used a late restart to power into the runner up position where he would finish.
Earning fast time honors on Tuesday night at Coos Bay Speedway, Copeland found himself in the fifth starting position later on in the feature event. Following track prep prior to the feature, Copeland got too high on the speedway and into some grease and slipped all the way back to 11th on the first lap.
Able to settle back into the racing groove, Copeland was impressive as he made up for the early issues. Working his way back through the field, Copeland fought his way back to a fifth-place finish.
Cottage Grove Speedway played host on Wednesday night, and after timing in seventh fastest in time trials, Copeland was again able to work his way into the Top-5 as he pocketed a fourth-place finish and the Oregon portion of the week wrapped up.
Checking into Skagit Speedway on Friday night for the first of two nights, the night started off with Copeland again timing in seventh quickest.
Advancing to a second-place finish from his fourth starting position in his heat race, Copeland was fourth in event points and locked into the 12th starting position on a very rough and heavy racing surface.
Amidst another wild and crazy feature event, Copeland was able to keep his nose clean for the most part as he avoided some of the carnage taking place around him. Able to finish sixth in the feature, Copeland just narrowly missed out on locking into Saturday’s feature on points, but was on the front row of his Saturday qualifier.
Picking up the win in his qualifier on a much different surface for Saturday’s action, Copeland then finished fifth in the Pole Shuffle, and rolled off the starting grid from the fifth starting position for the final 40-lap feature of the week as he chased after not only the $26K that was up for grabs to win the race, but also the Speedweek Championship.
Battling inside the Top-Five all race long, Copeland was able to work his way as high as third in the 40-lapper, but in the end, it was a fifth-place finish for him and the C&M Motorsports team, which was enough to cap off the week-long championship.
“It was a ton of fun, and it was great to be up front and contending for wins every night,” Colby Copeland said. “I am really thankful for Cody and Mandi, as well as Bobby for a great week, and all of the support, and hard work during a long week.”
