Cole Wakim 18th In Winged Sprint Car Action at Merced Speedway

PETERSEN MEDIA: Dipping his toe back into winged sprint car racing on Saturday night in Merced, CA, Cole Wakim got a taste of a rough and heavy bullring as he picked up an 18th place finish in the feature event.

“I have only made a handful of winged starts, so to get to a new track with the wing was pretty cool,” Cole Wakim said. “With the weather the track had endured the week leading up to the race, it was certainly tricky but I was pretty happy with how we adapted.”

With 30 cars in the pit area, Wakim timed the Quick Change Liquid Energy/Inland Rigging/MPe backed No. 73 entry in 18th fastest in qualifying time trials.

On a very locked down Merced Speedway surface in heat race action, Wakim had a couple of things go his way and he found himself in the fifth and final transfer position. Hanging on to the spot, the Simi Valley, CA driver was able to lock himself directly into the feature event.

Heading back to the track for the feature event, Wakim rolled off the starting grid from the 18th starting spot. When the wild race came to life, he initially lost a few positions as the field jockeyed around the bullring.

Slipping back to 21st, Wakim was able to settle in and get into a bit of a rhythm as the race progressed.

Taking advantage of a few miscues that took place ahead of him, Wakim was able to pick up a few positions as he worked his way back to finish 18th when the race came to a close.

“With the way the track was, and with how the feature played out I am just happy we rolled it back into the trailer in one piece,’ Wakim said. “It was wild, but it was a good surface to be on and learn a few things.”

JFM would like to thank Quick Change Liquid Energy, Inland Rigging, MPe, SURECAN, Woodland Auto Display, Beilman Motorsports, and 1Way Technologies for their support in 2025.

BY THE NUMBERS: Races: 25, Wins: 1, Top 5’s: 9, Top 10’s: 14

ON TAP: Wakim now heads to Ventura Raceway this weekend for the Turkey Night Grand Prix where he will pilot both a sprint car and midget.
