PETERSEN MEDIA: After earning a podium in his second ever winged start a few weeks back, Cole Wakim learned how the other side lived on Friday night as he was involved in his first winged roll over while in action at Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, CA.

“At least I got my first winged flip out of the way early,” Cole Wakim said light heartedly. “In all seriousness though, we had a pretty good car in the feature, I just got caught behind someone who came out of gear and with nowhere to go as they slowed drastically and caught their left rear and got upside down.”

Timing the Quick Change Liquid Energy/Inland Rigging/MPe backed No. 73 in ninth fastest in qualifying time trials after hitting the track early, Wakim lined up in the third row of his heat race.

Racing to a fifth place finish, Wakim moved into the feature event where he lined up in the eleventh starting position. With the track extremely different than the surface he had seen his first two nights, Wakim was up on the cushion as he was working his way forward.

Working his way into ninth by the third lap, Wakim saw his night come to an abrupt end as contact with a slowing car sent the Simi Valley, CA driver upside down. Though he was able to escape unharmed, his night was over.

“I hate that we tore up a racecar, and I hate that we only got to run a couple laps in the feature because seat time is so important right now,” Wakim said. “Thanks to the JFM team for continuing to work with me and get me acclimated to the winged cars.”
