Joel Myers Jr Races Into Saturday Night “C” During Chili Bowl Debut
PETERSEN MEDIA: Spending the American winter months competing in New Zealand the last handful of years, Joel Myers Jr was finally able to make his Chili Bowl debut this past weekend, as he piloted the Hayward Motorsports entry during the prestigious event, and qualified for the Saturday night ‘C’ Main.
“It was really cool to finally make it work to run Chili Bowl amidst a busy schedule down in New Zealand,” Joel Myers Jr said. “The Chili Bowl is a huge deal to Hayward Motorsports and I am really thankful that it worked out. We had a great partnership with Cust-o-Fab for the week, and it was really neat to meet their team and check out their facility.”
Arriving to Tulsa, OK after practice day, Myers Jr watched a few prelim nights before getting his shot on Thursday night. Laying down some very strong laps in practice, Myers Jr was set for heat race action where he went on to earn valuable points as he charged from his sixth starting position and finished fourth.
Having enough points to advance in to a qualifier, the Sebastopol, CA driver lined up seventh and needed to make a strong run forward to qualify directly for his preliminary night feature event.
Getting his elbows up, Myers Jr was extremely patient after moving into fifth on the opening lap. Stalking the competition in front of him, Myers Jr was able to pounce as they washed up the track and left the bottom groove open. Able to work his way into third, Myers Jr’s seventh to third effort put him solidly in the Thursday night feature event where he took the green flag from the 10th starting position.
When the feature event came to life, Myers Jr struggled at times as he battled a car that was just a tick on the tighter side after the track was re worked prior to the feature. Not able to maneuver how he had earlier in the night, Myers Jr did all he could to hang on as he closed his night out with a 15th place finish which put him in a D Main on Saturday night.
As Saturday night rolled around, Myers Jr rolled off the starting grid from the inside of the second row. When the green flag dropped, Myers Jr was hard on the throttle in the Cust-O-Fab/Keizer Wheels/IPC backed No. 19H entry. Racing his way into the lead, Myers Jr was able to pick up the win and keep his night going as he transferred into one of the night’s ‘C’ Mains.
Lining up 16th, Myers Jr had a short go of it as cars got together in front of him on the second lap and getting collected, his Chili Bowl Saturday night was over in an instant.
“It wasn’t how we wanted our weekend to end, but overall, I was happy with how my first run at it went,” Myers Jr said. “Thankful to Hayward Motorsports, Cust-O-Fab, and all of the marketing partners that made the week possible.”
