Joel Myers Jr Set for Gold Cup Race of Champions

PETERSEN MEDIA: Returning to his native California over the weekend to take part in the opening of High Limit Racing’s west coast swing, Joel Myers Jr had a tough ending to a solid Saturday night in Placerville, CA as he now prepares for this week’s Gold Cup Race of Champions in Chico, CA.

“It is always fun to get home and race the family car with so many friends and family members in attendance,” Joel Myers Jr said. “We were pretty good all night, but late in the feature we had a little miscue that essentially caused me to end our night a few laps early.”

With a robust 41 car field overflowing the pit area, Myers Jr timed the Graham Rahal Performance/Gary Tennyson Motorsports/All About Fire Protection backed No. 46JR entry in seventh fastest in his qualifying flight.

Lining up in the second row of his heat race, the Sebastopol, CA driver jumped into third when the race came to life as the field worked around the low side of the speedway. Holding the spot as the race came to an end, Myers Jr’s third place finish put him ninth on the starting grid for the 35-lap feature event.

As the feature event came to life, Myers Jr searched around the Speedway as track prep prior to the race gave drivers a few different lane options. Slipping back to 13th as he began working the low side of the speedway, Myers wasn’t able to make up ground but he maintained the spot and continued to run in the middle of the field.

With laps continuing to click off, Myers Jr started to search again as the race drew to a close. A restart on lap 31 saw Myers have some help getting up over the track’s banking and as he lost quite a few spots, he opted to stay off the surface and head back to the pit area and call it a night.

“Overall, I was pretty happy with how our night went,” Myers Jr said. “We were a little off in the feature and couldn’t get going, but I didn’t think we were too bad. Unfortunately, on the last restart we got off the track and instead of trying to fight back on I decided to call it a night.”
