Landon Brooks Charges to 4th and 2nd Place Finishes at Howard Kaeding Classic pres. by Core and Main
PETERSEN MEDIA: Traveling to Watsonville Speedway over the weekend for the Howard Kaeding Classic, an event that means so much to car owners Roger and Lori Hamilton, Landon Brooks was electric during each feature event as he charged to a fourth-place finish on Friday night before another exciting charge to second during Saturday’s finale.
“My Hamilton Racing team worked hard all week to put a new car together for the HK Classic and we were all really happy with the results,” Landon Brooks said. “We are still a little off in time trials, but as a whole it was a really good weekend for our team as we head into 360ci Speedweek.”
Friday night saw the HK Classic pres. by Core and Main kick off and Brooks timed the Lippert Construction/THE/Mozingo Construction backed No. 21L in 16th fastest in qualifying time trials.
By way of a fifth-place finish in his heat race, Brooks took the green flag from Friday night’s feature event in the 13thstarting position. When the race came to life, the Rio Oso, CA driver showcased a very strong car in the early laps after slipping back to 15th on the start.
Back into 13th on the fifth lap, Brooks was up into 10th on the ninth lap and getting stronger. However, a caution on the 10th lap lined the field up in double file formation and the ensuing restart saw contact send Brooks spinning off the end of turns one and two.
Able to restart, Brooks found himself back in 21st but again wasted no time working his way forward. Quickly back into the Top-15 on the 13th lap, Brooks was into 10th on the 17th lap and working his way towards the Top-5.
A couple of restarts played into Brooks’ favor as he raced into fifth on the 25th lap, and in the final two laps of the race was able to secure a fourth-place finish.
Returning to the track for Saturday’s $10,000-to-win finale, Brooks found himself 14th on the starting grid with 30-laps ahead of him on the Santa Cruz County bullring.
Jumping into 10th when the race came to life, Brooks was up into eighth on the fifth lap after the lead duo both had issues at the front of the field.
Able to avoid a multi car wreck on the ensuing restart, Brooks was into fourth on the eighth lap. As the race got into a groove, Brooks wrestled the runner-up spot away from Justin Sanders on the 12th lap, and turned his attention to Shane Golobic who was setting a very quick pace in front of the field. As the leaders got into traffic, Brooks was hopeful to close in on Golobic’s gap, but the lead two both were very strong through traffic and Golobic was able to maintain his gap.
Brooks was equally as strong in the runner up spot and was not challenged for the spot in the final laps as he capped off a Hard Charger performance and finished second.
“I know how much this race means to my car owners, Roger and Lori Hamilton, and I am really happy we were able to run so well at it,” Brooks noted.
For the Hamilton family, they were very happy with how the HK Classic went not only for their team, but overall, with their strong ties to the Kaeding family.
“We would like to offer our congratulations to both Dominic Gorden and Shane Golobic for each picking up wins at the Howard Kaeding Classic,” Roger and Lori Hamilton, owners of Hamilton Racing said. “Not only did Shane win on Saturday but he ran well on Friday and finished second ahead of Bud Kaeding who had a great third place run. We’d also like to congratulate our team and Landon Brooks for finishing second on Saturday night and Justin Sanders for a third-place run. Also, both Tanner Carrick and Landon were great each night and earned Hard Charger honors for their respective runs.”
“We would also like to thank Core and Main for their support of the event for the second consecutive year as the event’s presenting sponsor,” they added. “Bud, Brent, and the entire Kaeding continue to build this event up and they did a wonderful job at this year’s edition that surely would make both Howard and Joel proud. Lastly, but surely not least, a big thank you to Miles and his High Five Pizza/Catering by Five staff for the outstanding food all weekend long as well as The Connor Party for the outstanding entertainment.”
