Landon Brooks Powers to NARC Top-5

PETERSEN MEDIA: Landon Brooks and the Hamilton Racing team showed their resolve on Friday night as they overcame a handful of issues before racing to a fifth-place finish with NARC at Watsonville Speedway.

“Friday night, we didn’t get timed in well, but we managed to run third in our heat race despite breaking a steering box,” Landon Brooks said. “Luckily, I have the best group of guys behind me and they were able to swap boxes, and then fix a few things on our engine before getting us ready for the feature.”

Timing the Lippert Construction/Tiner Hirst Ent./Mozingo Construction backed No. 21L in 17th fastest in time trials, Brooks found himself in the third row of his heat race.

On the recently reconfigured Watsonville Speedway, Brooks was able to get off to a great start as he powered his way up to third, which is when his steering box troubles began.

Luckily a caution flew and gave him a few moments to rest, and in the final laps he was able to hang on and wrestle his car to a third-place finish.

As he made his way back to the pit area, the Hamilton Racing team quickly went to work on swapping out steering boxes. As they were able to make the swap and fire the car off to check the changes, they then found an engine issue they needed to resolve.

Turning their attention to rectifying some issues with the injection, they were able to again fire off to double check those changes.

With everything back together, Brooks was ready for the feature event where he lined up ninth on a very fast Watsonville Speedway surface. The first half of the race clicked off with no stoppages and when the first yellow flew the Rio Oso, CA driver found himself in seventh.

Dropping back to eighth when the race came back to life, Brooks used another restart to power his way up to sixth. Continuing to hold down sixth as the leaders got into traffic, Brooks made a late move to take over fifth and was able to secure his first NARC top five of the season.

Switching to their 360ci powerplant for Saturday night action, Brooks and company made their way to Placerville Speedway for the Davy Thomas Memorial.

Laying down a very strong lap in time trials, Brooks ended up fifth fastest in his qualifying flight which then placed him on the front row of his heat race. Getting called for a jump in his heat, Brooks was put back into the second row and a fourth-place finish lined him up in the 14th spot in the 30-lap feature event.

With things going his way in the opening laps, Brooks was up into ninth before he moved into eighth on the fifth lap.

A slight miscue on the seventh lap dropped Brooks back to 16th. Once he got gathered up, Brooks was able to move forward as he was up into 15th on the 12th lap, and into 13th at the race’s halfway point.

With five-to-go, Brooks was able to take over the 11th spot and hang onto it as he capped the night off with an 11th place finish.

“We really had great speed on Saturday night, I just made two costly mistakes that hurt us,” Brooks added. “I am really thankful for all of my guys for working so hard over a doubleheader weekend. I also want to thank the Hamilton family and all of our partners for continuing to give us the tools we need to compete night in and night out.”
