Landon Brooks Scores Pair of Top-10’s With Matt Wood Racing In Merced, CA

PETERSEN MEDIA: Landon Brooks and the Matt Wood Racing team were back in action over the weekend where Brooks had another strong weekend with the USAC NOS Energy Drink National Midget Series as he finished 10th on Friday night before bouncing back from a heat race flip to finish seventh in Saturday’s feature.

“Big thanks to Shane Golobic and the entire Matt Wood Racing team,” Landon Brooks said. “We were really good each time we hit the track and I am happy to get two good finishes as we now look forward to Chili Bowl.”

Still battling weather in the region, the team at Merced Speedway was able to get their facility dried out and graciously stepped up to make their one-day show and two day program so teams could get another race in.

Hitting the bullring on Friday night on a heavy and locked down surface, Brooks laid down a great time in qualifying as he was sixth fastest in the Lippert Construction/Hamilton Racing/MWR backed No. 57W, but with the format it wasn’t the most ideal spot to be in.

On this night, passing was extremely tough in heat race action and Brooks ended up finishing sixth which forced him into the night’s ‘B’ Main. Able to get the jump and shoot out to the lead in the semi, the Rio Oso, CA driver raced to the win and locked into the 30-lap feature event.

Lining up 12th in the feature, a fast-paced non-stop race didn’t see much passing with the track still holding moisture and allowing everyone to carry a ton of speed.

Able to pick up a pair of spots over the course of the 6:29 second race, Brooks closed his Friday night out with a 10thplace effort.

Returning to Merced Speedway on Saturday night for one final night of Midget racing before January’s Chili Bowl Midget Nationals, Brooks got off to a quick start as he ended up third fastest in time trials.

Moving into heat race action on a track that had a bit of character to it, Brooks fell victim as he caught a hole wrong and flipped violently. After the wild ride, Brooks was able to walk away but his MWR team had to thrash to get the Keizer Wheels/THE/Shane Golobic Composites backed entry ready for the night’s ‘B’.

Working hard, the team was able to get Brooks back on track for the ‘B’, and after finishing second, he was qualified for the feature where he took the green flag from the 11th starting position after getting his qualifying time back.

With the track a little more racy on this night for the feature, Brooks was able to make some headway from his 11thstarting position.

Working his way into the Top-10 quickly, Brooks continued to charge his way forward as he chased after a spot in the Top-5.

Continuing to race wheel to wheel with some of midget racing’s best, Brooks worked his way into the seventh position by the time the checkered flag flew to cap off his two-week stint with the USAC National series.

“Saturday night we set ourselves up well in time trials, but I made a mistake and caught a hole wrong in our heat race and took a pretty wild ride,” Brooks added. “Thanks to the MWR guys for busting their butt’s and getting us back on track. I also want to thank Lippert Construction and Hamilton Racing for their continued support of the midget effort. Really excited to get back to Chili Bowl for another year with MWR.”

Landon Brooks would like to thank Lippert Construction, Hamilton Racing, Matt Wood Racing, Keizer Wheels, Tiner Hirst Enterprise, and Shane Golobic Composites for their support.
