PETERSEN MEDIA- Kicking off his 2015 season with a trip down under to his native Australia, Kerry Madsen and his Keneric Racing started off their campaign with three nights of racing at Sydney’s Valvoline Raceway.
“We showed some good car speed on our opening night, came on second on night, set quick time on night three, but tried some new things and missed the set up. It was not quite the start we had hoped for, but can’t wait to get to Brisbane and race at Archerfield Speedway,” Madsen said.
Kicking his season off on January 1st, Madsen timed his Keneric Racing/American Racing/KCP No. 29 machine in ninth quick before scoring a second place finish in heat race action.
Starting in the sixth row of the feature event, things went haywire on the opening lap, and the end result was a flat tire on Madsen’s machine, and a quick trip to the work area was needed.
Upon fixing the flat, Madsen tagged the rear of the field, but showed the strong crowd on hand that he had speed, as he carved his way back through the field.
Getting back up to the sixth spot by the 16th lap, Madsen was involved in another wreck, which caused more damage, and his night came to an early end.
“It was a tough way to start the trip, but we had some really good car speed, and really gave ourselves a good baseline,” Madsen explained.
January 3rd saw the team check back into the Valvoline Raceway and Madsen again turned in a strong qualifying effort as he timed in 10th fastest.
Picking up the heat win, Madsen earned a berth in the Top-8 Shootout, and ultimately earned the fourth starting spot in the feature event.
In a very fast paced feature event, Madsen was able to work into the second spot, as he chased after fellow World of Outlaw competitor, Brad Sweet. With only a single caution hampering the race, Madsen could not muster a move around Sweet, and settled for second at the stripe.
“Saturday night we were really good, but we just got beat,” he said. “After the rough night on the first, we were all really pleased with the effort we had.”
Closing out his opening trio of races, Madsen and company came out of the gates swinging on Monday night, as he set the standard in time trials.
Finishing sixth in his heat race, the 2014 Kings Royal Champion was forced to go through the B main, which he would win, to earn a spot in the feature event.
Lining up behind the Shootout cars, Madsen would start in the ninth position, and seemed to struggle at times during the feature event.
With a thick cushion around the speedway, Madsen just did quite have what he needed to move forward, and slipped back to a 12th place finish.
“We tired some things on Monday night, and they just did not work,” he explained. “We were really good in time trials, but the rest of the night kind of went down hill. I would also like to give a shout out to the new owner of the Speedway, Barry Waldron. He and his staff really need to be commended for the job they have done on the track and it’s facilities.”
2015 BY THE NUMBERS- Starts-3, Wins-0, Top-5’s-1, Top 10’s-1
ON TAP: Madsen will be at the Archerfield Speedway in Brisbane this weekend for two night of action with the World Series Sprint Cars.
