PETERSEN MEDIA- Fresh off of winning his final race in the United States just one week ago, Jonathan Allard rode the momentum all the way to New Zealand on Saturday night where he picked up the Auckland Championship at the Springs Speedway.
“We were awesome all night, and I have to thank my guys for making sure everything was ready to go when I arrived in New Zealand early last week,” Allard said.
Lining up for his first heat race in the second row, Allard was on kill as he quickly jumped into the lead, and never looked back as he powered his way to the win. Lining up again in the second row of his second heat race, the Chico, CA driver would finish in the third spot.
Lining up in the second row for the 25-lap Auckland Championship A-Main, Allard quickly worked into second as he ran in Daniel Eagleton’s wake. Gaining on the leader in lapped traffic the caution flag would waive on the 10th lap, putting Allard on the leader’s rear bumper.
Lining up on the outside row for the double fine restart, Allard would sail into the lead getting into turns one and tow, and quickly gapped the field and found himself in traffic with five laps to go.
A lapped car would nearly ruin Allard’s night as it drifted up in front of the leader causing Allard to get out of the gas. Getting sucked into the wall, Allard would not let the contact slow him down as he was able to maintain his advantage and race his way to his 13th overall win in the calendar year.
The Auckland Championship also marked the first round of the new eight-round Champions Sprinter Series that will be contested between Springs Speedway and Bay Park Speedway, and with is performance on Saturday, Allard now holds the early lead.
“It is great to get down here and reunite with all of my great fans and get a win early,” Allard said. “It feels great to be back in New Zealand and I am looking forward to getting back to the track.”
