PETERSEN MEDIA: After being forced to miss the 2016 Trophy Cup due to health reasons, Andy Gregg was excited to get back to work at the prestigious event over the last weekend as he would put in a nice body of work that saw him finish 13th in overall points of the 90 cars that entered in the event.

“Trophy Cup is a tough race, and this year things finally seemed to go our way,” Andy Gregg said. “We had a ton of speed all three nights, and luck was on our side for a change.”

With 90 cars checked into Thunderbowl Raceway on Thursday night to open the 24th Trophy Cup up, Gregg timed the GUTS/Angius and Terry LLP/Capitol Ace Hardware backed No. 16 machine in 10th fastest in his qualifying flight.

Having a little luck in his heat race, Gregg would avoid a multi car pile up and finish second which was good enough to lock him into the Thursday night feature event.

Lining up in the sixth starting position, Gregg would settle into the Top-10 as the race was slowed by a couple of early cautions. Battling with Willie Croft, Shane Golobic and Geoff Ensign for position, Gregg would end his night with a 12th place finish.

Sitting 10th in points after the first night, Gregg would be back in action on Friday night looking to better his total for Saturday night’s finale. Timing in eighth quickest in qualifying time trials, Gregg would finish seventh in his heat race.

Finding himself 11th in one of the twin “B” mains, Gregg would put together a nice charge as he would come so close to transferring to the feature event, but came just short as he finished fifth and ended his night.

When the rest of the night concluded, Gregg found himself 16th in event points heading in Saturday night heat races. Working his way to a fifth place finish in his heat race, Gregg would move into the 50-lap feature event where he would take the green flag from the fifth starting position as he still sat 16th in points.

Running in the Top-Five during the early goings of the race, Gregg would find himself battling Chase Johnson and Michael Kofoid for position as the laps clicked down.

Sitting back in ninth when the yellow flew on lap 28 and turned into the open red, Gregg would lose a couple of positions as he fell back to 11th with action picking up with high point guys making their way to the front.

Able to pick up the lost positions and get back to the Top-10, Gregg would battle with Cory Eliason in the race’s closing laps as he finished the race in the 11th spot and closed the weekend out 13th in points.

“It is an extremely tough show, and I am proud of how we stacked up against some of the best drivers in the country and on the West Coast,” Gregg said. “Really happy with how things went, and we will see how we can close this thing out in Stockton in a couple of weeks.”

Andy would like to thank GUTS, Angius and Terry LLP, Capitol ACE Hardware, Ice House Resort, CTL Forest Management, ARP Enterprises, Ervin Sales, Broadband Agreements, Russo Insurance, Kelly Moore Paints, Cal Pro Paint and Construction, Triple X, Wilwood, FK Shocks, FK Rod Ends, K&N,  King Racing Products, BR Motorsports, Amerikote, Pony Express Service, and MF Inc. for their support in 2017.

ON TAP: Gregg will return to action in Stockton, CA on November 4th.
