PETERSEN MEDIA: Putting a frustrating night of racing from a week ago behind him, Andy Gregg and his Russell Motorsports team returned to action on Saturday night and Gregg turned in a strong performance as he finished with a third place finish.

“We had a really strong car, and I just got into the cushion too hard on a late restart trying to get into the lead, and we ended up finishing in the third spot,” Andy Gregg said.

After timing his Capitol Ace Hardware/Thompson’s Toyota/New Gen Landscape Management No. 14r machine in second fastest, the Placerville, CA driver would finish in the third spot during heat race action.

Finding himself in the second row for the 25-lap feature event, Gregg would slip back to the fifth spot in the early part of the race that was marred by caution flags. Gregg came alive during an early restart, as he rocketed around Jimmy Trulli and Greg DeCaires to move back into the third spot.

A lap-10 restart would kick off an extended green flag run, and with race coming back to life, Gregg would move into the second spot as he began his pursuit of the early race leader, Justyn Cox.

With Cox on the cushion, Gregg would shoot low on a few occasions as he made a bid for the lead but would be denied, as the duo continue to run side-by-side as they got into dense traffic.

Lap 21 saw the caution flag waive, but Gregg would have two lapped cars between himself and the leader. When the green flag dropped, Gregg was quick to clear traffic and chase after Cox only to the see the yellow flag fly for the final time on the 24th lap.

The restart would see Gregg go to make a final challenge for the lead, but as he got into the cushion to hard Gregg would fall back to third spot where he would finish.

“The rain made the track pretty tacky and fast so you had to be patient with your moves,” Gregg added. “We had a strong car and I knew I had to go on that last restart but I made a small mistake. It is great to finish back on the podium and I have to thank everyone on the Russell Motorsports team for all of their hard work, and thank all of our sponsors for continuing to support us.”

Andy and the Russell Motorsports team would like to thank Capitol Ace Hardware, Thompson’s Toyota, New Gen Landscape Management, Nail It Roofing, Carroll Russell Bookkeeping, Arnold’s For Awards, Goodwin Trucking, Farrell Design-Build Inc., HJS Consulting, Poor’s Equipment Repair, CTL Forrest Management, K&T Fab, K&N Products, FK Rod Ends, King Racing Products, A.R.T. Speed Equipment, GUTS, Amsoil, Wilwood, Amerikote, Brown and Miller Racing Solutions, Factory Kahne Shocks, Hinchman Indy, and Hansen Machine for their support in 2015.
