Ashton Torgerson Scores Pair of 7th Place Finishes in Sprint Car Action

PETERSEN MEDIA- Returning home to California to compete in his family owned winged 360ci sprint car with the scheduled midget races in PA rained out, Ashton Torgerson had a very consistent weekend as he picked up two seventh place finishes during two nights of action at Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, CA.

Kicking the weekend off on Friday night, Torgerson wasted no time shaking any sprint car rust off as he timed in second fastest in time trials after going out very late in the qualifying session.

Lining up in the second row of his heat race, Torgerson slipped back during the eight-lap race as he finished sixth and knocked himself out of Dash eligibility.

Still, locking into the feature event the Glendale, AZ pilot lined up in the 17th starting position with 30-laps to make a run through the field.

When the race came to life, Torgerson was slowly able to begin his march towards the Top-10. Racing into 14th just before the halfway point, Torgerson moved into 12th on the 16th lap.

Continuing to work around the immaculately prepared Ocean Speedway surface, Torgerson took over 10th on the 19th lap. Though time was running out, he continued to get better as the race drew on. Moving into 9th on the 20th lap, Torgerson then found himself up into the seventh position on the 21st lap.

Once in seventh, he settled in and capped Friday night off with the Top-10 finish.

Returning to the track on Saturday night for another night of winged 360ci sprint car action, Torgerson again timed in well as he stopped the clocks sixth quickest of the 27 drivers that had checked into the pit area for the Johnny Key Classic.

Lining up on the front row of his heat race, Torgerson got the jump and took control of the race. Leading from flag to flag, Torgerson picked up the win and earned a spot in the Trophy Dash.

Drawing the one for the Dash redraw, Torgerson led the field to green for the 4-lap shootout to set the first four rows of the ‘A’ Main event.

Finishing second, the Xtreme Outlaws Midget Series regular was on the fornt row of the 31-lap feature event as he started alongside Bud Kaeding.

When the race went green, Torgerson slipped back to third, but was back into second by the fifth lap. Running well with the lead pack of cars, Torgerson continued to battle for second and third until he slipped back to fifth on the 14th lap.

After slipping back, the youngster continued to look for a way back forward but opened himself up and fell back as far as eighth as he worked around the coastal bullring.

Battling between seventh and eighth for the final six laps of the feature event, Torgerson was able to secure seventh on the final lap and cap his weekend off with a pair of Top-10’s as he now shifts his attention to 410ci action this week.

BY THE NUMBERS: Starts-59, Wins-5, Top 5’s-15, Top 10’s-39
