PETERSEN MEDIA: Doing a little double duty action on Sunday night in Stockton, CA, Austin Liggett would make a rare winged 360 start and finish 12th with the Sprint Car Challenge Tour during the Jimmy Sills Classic.
“We had a good start to the night, but I just wasn’t able to get to the rubber fast enough and we fell back and ended up finishing 12th,” Austin Liggett said. “Landon Hurst really had my car dialed in all night, and it is just frustrating to go backwards.”
With a healthy field of cars on hand, Liggett would time the Excel Environmental Services/Liggett Trucking/Lucas Oil backed machine in fourth fastest in his qualifying group and seventh quickest over all in time trials.
Lining up on the front row of his heat race, the Tracy, CA product would withstand several stoppages before finally picking up the win and moving into the all important Dash.
Lining up seventh in the Dash on the slicked off surface, Liggett would pick up two positions as he finished fifth, which placed him in the third row for the 30-lap feature event.
With the track continuing to slick off, Liggett would take the green flag and quickly search for traction as he was loose in the early goings of the race.
Falling back, Liggett would soon find himself in the 12th spot as the track quickly began taking rubber as the surface had become quite abrasive. Once the rubber went down, Liggett was forced to get in line and hit his marks as he fought to keep his tires underneath him.
Staying in line hoping to take advantage of a mistake or two in front of him, Liggett would stay in the 12th spot as the checkered flew on the feature event.
“I don’t have a ton of winged experience, and I am hoping to change that so we can capitalize better on good starting positions,” Liggett added. “All in all it was a good night, and I continue to learn a lot in these cars. As an added bonus, we were really fast with some of the fastest guys on the west coast, so that is definitely a good thing for us.”
Austin Liggett Racing would like to thank Excel Environmental Services, Liggett Trucking, Lucas Oil, Tool Technology, Infinity Shocks, Steve Watt Enterprises, Brian Sperry Racing, and Jarrett Soares Racing for their support.
2017 BY THE NUMBERS: Races-20, Wins-8, Top 5’s-16, Top 10’s-19
ON TAP: Liggett will return to action on Saturday night as he travels to Ventura, CA with the USAC West Coast 360 Series.
