PETERSEN MEDIA: Getting two more nights of racing in at Ventura Raceway over the Thanksgiving holiday, a very strong 2019 season has come to a close for Austin Liggett and the Austin Liggett Racing team.

“Mother Nature put a huge damper on the Turkey Night Grand Prix, but the show still went on and we were able to lock both the Sprint Car and the Midget into the feature event’s that were ran on Friday,” Austin Liggett said.

The action kicked off with Midget practice and Sprint Car heat races and qualifiers on Wednesday night at the scenic facility. Picking up a fifth-place finish in his heat race, the Tracy, CA driver would be 20th in points aboard the Excel Environmental Services/Liggett Trucking/Tool Technology machine and safely locked into a qualifier.

Turning in an extremely strong performance in his qualifier, Liggett’s run from fifth to second would push him up to eighth in points and lock him into Wednesday night’s 15-lap Dash which set the first five rows of the Sprint Car feature.

Racing his way to a sixth-place finish, Liggett would be locked into the 41-lap feature event that was ultimately pushed back to Friday after rain saturated the facility on Thursday and delayed the Turkey Night Grand Prix finale.

With the weather taking its toll on the facility, officials did all they could to get the show in despite the extremely rough and tumble racing conditions. When the green flag dropped on the 41-lap feature event, Liggett would go to work on the bottom groove of the speedway as he worked inside the Top-10.

Navigating around the tricky surface, Liggett would lose a couple of positions, but still did a great job of wrestling his machine around as he accepted the checkered flag in the eighth position.

Getting Friday night kicked off with Midget qualifying, Liggett got off to a great start as he timed the Excel Environmental Services/ZMAX Racing Oil/Hurst Fabrications mount timed in ninth quickest of the 68 cars checked into the prestigious event.

Based on his qualifying time, Liggett would lock directly into the 98-lap feature event and take the green flag from the ninth starting position. With issues arising early in the feature event, Liggett would head back to his pit area on the fifth lap and bring his season to a close.

“It was unfortunate the weather had to intervene like it did, but there is nothing you can do about that,” Liggett said. “We had speed in both cars, and we had a great time as family for Thanksgiving which is what this is all about. My Dad, Mom, Britton, Landon, and Angela worked hard all week, and I thank them a ton for all they do for me.”

Austin Liggett Racing would like to thank Excel Environmental Services, Liggett Trucking, Tool Technology, Hurst Fabrications, Maxwell Industries, Shine Photography, ZMAX Racing Oil, and Transport Products Unlimited for their support.

2019 BY THE NUMBERS: Races-34, Wins-9, Top 5’s-18, Top 10’s-23

ON TAP: Liggett will be idle the next month as he turns his attention to the Chili Bowl Midget Nationals in Tulsa, OK January 13-18.
