PETERSEN MEDIA: Coming off of another Championship campaign in 2018, Tracy, CA wheelman Austin Ligget got his 2019 season underway last week at the Chili Bowl Midget Nationals in Tulsa, OK where he took the wheel of a very strong Del and Robyn Morris owned entry.
“I really want to thank Del and Robyn Morris and the entire Morris Motorsports team for providing me with such a strong midget for the Chili Bowl,” Austin Liggett said. “We kind of had some tough luck on Saturday night, but we were fast all week long and I feel like if we don’t get caught up we have a chance at getting through a couple of features.”
Liggett got his Chili Bowl underway on Friday night in what was the final night of preliminary night action. Lining up in the second row, Liggett would quickly move into second where he would wage war on midget ace, Chad Boat. Briefly getting into the lead, Liggett would admittedly make a mistake and it would allow Boat to capitalize as Liggett settled for second.
Having enough points to qualify for a qualifier, the Tracy, CA driver would feel contact from the rear and it would get him out of shape as he would fall from his third starting position back to eighth. Keeping his cool, the 2018 USAC West Coast 360 Champion hit his marks and clawed his way back up to finish third which gave him enough points to transfer directly into the ‘A’ where he would line up 15th.
Getting off to a nice start, Ligget would get a few spots in what would be a non-stop 25 lap affair. Getting up to 12th and in striking distance of a pack of cars inside the Top-10, Liggett would start to fight the handling of his machine as he started losing grip and track position. Falling back to finish 17th, Liggett would find himself in a Saturday night ‘D’ main.
Lining up in the fourth row of his ‘D’, Liggett continued to show speed in the Morris Motorsports entry as he would slice and dice his way up to finish third and continue his night on into the ‘C’.
From the 21st starting position, Liggett was on a roll as he would pick off cars at will in the ‘C’ as it looked like he would contend for a transfer spot into the ‘B’. Getting into the Top-10 within the race’s first handful of laps, Liggett would then find himself collected in a couple other driver’s mess as damage to his mount his bring his Chili Bowl to an end.
“I was really bummed that I got caught up and wrecked such a fast racecar,” Liggett noted. “I think we had a really good chance at moving into the ‘B’ and then who knows who that would have gone. Aside from the Morris’ I also have to thank my parents and Excel Environmental for all of their support last week.”
