PETERSEN MEDIA: Just one week removed from claiming his first Midget win, Austin Liggett wasted no time getting his second as he would actually sweep the USAC program at Santa Maria Raceway and win both the Midget and Sprint Car features.
“You don’t get nights where you win two main events in one night in two different types of cars, so it is really special to me,” Austin Liggett said. “It was a ton of work and I can’t thank my team enough.”
In USAC Western States Midget action, Liggett would get things kicked off by timing his machine in third fastest among the 17 cars checked in for competition.
Going from fifth to fourth in his heat race, the Tracy, CA pilot would grid the field form the fourth starting position as he sought after his second consecutive midget win with the series.
A torrid battle for the top spot during the first half of the race would actually see the leader lose the handle in front of Liggett and leave him with no where to go and making contact. Able to stay fired, Liggett would fall back to fourth though would have handling issues due to a flat right front tire.
The gasser stayed poised and adapted well as he manhandled his machine back up to second, before getting around Cory Elliot with four laps to go. Out in front, Liggett would keep the top spot as he claimed his second consecutive midget win.
Moving into Sprint Car competition, Liggett was just as strong in that car as he timed in seventh fastest in time trials before finishing fourth in his heat race.
Lining up on the pole of this race, Liggett would find himself in another spirited battle for the top spot as he would finally find his way out front on the seventh lap.
Just as he did in the midget feature, Liggett was rocket fast out front. Keeping the field at bay, Liggett capped a memorable night with the Sprint Car win, giving him a sweep for the night.
“My dad really had the Sprint Car dialed all night long, and Scott gave me a great Midget,” Liggett added. “To run both cars, I have to give a huge thanks to our partners for making it possible, as well as my mom and Matt for their hard work all night as well.”
Austin Liggett Racing would like to thank Excel Environmental Services, Liggett Trucking, Tool Technology, Hurst Fabrications, Maxwell Industries, Shine Photography, and Morris Motorsports for their support.
2019 BY THE NUMBERS: Races-10, Wins-4, Top 5’s-8, Top 10’s-8
ON TAP: Liggett is aimed at Kern Raceway Park to take part in the POWRi BCRA Lucas Oil Midget Series event on Friday, and is scheduled to be at Ventura Raceway on Saturday to race with the USAC/CRA Sprint Car Series.
