Austin Liggett Picks Up Pair of Third Place Finishes with USAC

PETERSEN MEDIA: Austin Liggett spent his weekend competing with USAC on the West Coast picking up a third-place finish with USAC/CRA on Friday night, and a third-place finish with the USAC Western States Midgets on Saturday night.

“Overall, it was a really good weekend for this race team,” Austin Liggett said. “We haven’t even hit our stride yet and we had two cars that were knocking on the door for wins so that has us all excited about the year ahead.”

Friday night, Liggett checked in at Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, CA for a night of action with the USAC/CRA Series. With 20 cars checked in, Liggett timed the Excel Environmental Services/Liggett Trucking/Tool Technology backed No. 83 in 10th fastest in qualifying.

Lining up fourth in his heat race, the Tracy, CA pilot would finish fourth and move into the feature event where he would take the green flag from the 10th starting position.

With a very stout car underneath him, Liggett was able to make some bold moves on the 1/3-mile oval that saw him quickly work into the Top-5. Racing his way into third, Liggett would look for a way to the front in the closing laps. Witt things not quite playing out in his favor, Liggett would hang on to the podium spot and cap his night off with a third-place finish.

Saturday night the team headed south and checked in at Bakersfield Speedway for a USAC Western States Midget event. With 20 cars also checked in for the series’ season opener, Liggett would get off to a quick start as he timed in third fastest in time trials.

Taking the green flag from the sixth position in heat race action, Liggett would continue to flex his muscle as he powered his way to an impressive third place finish, putting him fourth on the starting grid for the feature event.

Jumping into second at the race’s onset, Liggett would hold down the second position as he chased after early leader, Davey Ray. Stalking Ray, Liggett would make a move on the 24th lap to grab the race lead.

Once in the lead, Liggett would begin to pull away as he looked to be well on his way to a feature event win. That is until a late caution set up a green-white-checkered finish.

The ensuing restart saw Liggett get out to the lead but he was feel pressure from Chase Johnson and Ray. As Johnson was able to pull away, Liggett would keep pace and look to make a move on the last lap. As Liggett closed in on Johnson, he would endure a big move from Ray, and it would relegate him to a third-place finish.

“Saturday night we had a great car, and I thought we had it,” Liggett said. “Unfortunately that caution bunched us all back up, and a couple moves didn’t go our way and we ended up third. Thanks to my guys for all their help during two nights of racing.”

Austin Liggett Racing would like to thank Excel Environmental Services, Liggett Trucking, Tool Technology, Hurst Fabrications, Maxwell Industries, Shine Photography, ZMAX Racing Oil, and Transport Products Unlimited for their support.

BY THE NUMBERS: Races-4, Wins-0, Top 5’s-2, Top 10’s-2
