PETERSEN MEDIA: Climbing aboard his family owned Midget for the first time in 2020, Austin Liggett would put together another strong run as he finished second at Petaluma Speedway on Saturday night.
“We had a really solid night, but Alex Schutte was just a little bit better than us and we got beat,” Austin Liggett said. “It was great to get back in the midget again and have some fun.”
With 19 cars checked in, Liggett timed the Excel Environmental Services/Liggett Trucking/Tool Technology backed No. 83 machine in third fastest in qualifying time trials on the Petaluma Speedway gumbo.
Lining up fifth in his heat race, the Tracy, CA driver flexed his muscle early as he carved up the field and raced his way to the win.
Lining up fourth in the feature, Liggett would benefit from the front row having issues getting the race started and eventually took the green flag from the front row himself.
Getting the jump, Liggett would lead early in what turned into a caution plagued feature event. One of the many restarts saw Liggett slip back to second as Schutte was able to get by him to overtake him for the top spot.
Able to stick with the leader, Liggett would hook a massive rut in turns one and two that nearly stalled his engine, and let Schutte take off and check out.
Once he was able to gather his machine back up and get back up to speed, Schutte had built up a sizeable lead, and Liggett held on to finish in the second position on this night.
“Once we hooked that rut, there was no chance at us catching him,” Liggett said. “It was great to be back in the midget, and we have some homework to do before our next race which is always fun. Thank you to my parents, Britton, Matt, and Landon for all of their hard work.”
