PETERSEN MEDIA: Winning at the Thunderbowl back in May, Austin Liggett returned to the 1/3 mile oval on Friday night looking for more Central Valley lore, but he would come up just short as he tallied a second place finish.
“It was a great night,” Austin Liggett said. “We were fast all night long, and my dad had us dialed from the time we unloaded to the time we took the checkered flag.”
Earning quick time honors in time trials, Austin Liggett put the field on notice during heat race action as he picked up the win after taking the green flag from the sixth starting position.
Moving into the 30-lap feature event, the Tracy, CA pilot would line up in the sixth starting position for what would be a non-stop feature event.
On a racy Thunderbowl surface, Liggett would get to digging, as he carved his way into the third position. Once into third, Liggett had his work cut out for himself as the lead duo of Ryan Bernal and Tristan Guardino had broken away from the field and built up nearly a straight away advantage.
Doing all he could and hitting his marks, Liggett would slowly reel them in and the battle up front intensified in the final laps.
Battling hard, Liggett would actually use a run on the last lap to beat Ryan Bernal to the stripe to finish second by just a fraction of a second.
“I had a lot of fun tracking those guys down, and battling with them late,” Liggett added. “I definitely needed a caution, but still a great night for our team. Thanks to my parents, and Matt for all of their help. Also, big thanks to the Abreu family for providing some extra track equipment, and the track staff for getting the surface really good.”
