Austin McCarl 5th at ‘Tribute to GP’

PETERSEN MEDIA- Making a return trip to California to pilot the Roth Motorsports No. 83jr, Austin McCarl would overcome a flip in his heat race to pick up a fifth-place finish during the 37th Annual Tribute to GP at the Stockton Dirt Track.

“First and foremost, I have to thank Dennis and Teresa Roth for another opportunity to head west and drive their car,” Austin McCarl said. “The night started off really well, I just got a little too aggressive in our heat race going for a Dash spot and ended up getting upside down.”

Timing the Roth Enterprises/HR Livestock Transportation/Jason, Tara, and Cole Roth Cattle Co. No. 83jr in fifth fastest in qualifying time trials, McCarl would be in hot pursuit of a Dash berth on a very rough and tumble Stockton Dirt Track.

Chasing after Justyn Cox, McCarl would hook a rut in turns one and two resulting in a series of flips. While he was able to walk away, his heat race was over, and it was time for the Roth Motorsports team to go to work in the pit area.

Able to make repairs, and get McCarl ready for the feature event, the Altoona, IA pilot would roll off the starting grid from the ninth position on a track that was still extremely fast and even more rough that it was in heat race action.

From the fifth row, McCarl had a strong car underneath him but passing was tough on the ultra-fast surface.

Following a slow start to the race saw some a red a couple of cautions, McCarl was able to settle into a groove as he worked forward into the Top-5. As the race got into an extended green flag run, the top-five would get strung out and ‘The Big Unit’ would hold down the fifth spot where he would go on to finish.

“The guys did a great job of getting the car back together for the feature,” McCarl added. “We did some things to the car that I wasn’t really used to, but with the way the track was it was necessary, and I think we were pretty good. It was a wild race, and I was happy to survive with a Top-Five and am hopeful we can race together again next year.”

The Roth Motorsports team would like to thank Roth Enterprises, HR Livestock Transportation, Jason, Tara, And Cole Roth Cattle Co., Roth Investments, FK Rod Ends, Weld Wheels, Brown and Miller Racing Solutions, Kent Performance, Kaeding Performance, and Smith Titanium for their support in 2020.
