PETERSEN MEDIA- Austin Torgerson and his Torgerson Racing team made the trip to Lemoore Speedway in Lemoore, CA this past weekend and took part in the Cal Cup. When the dust settled on the annual event, Torgerson collected Top-Five finishes in both Non-Winged and Winged Super 600 action over the course of the three-day extravaganza.
Thursday night the action kicked off in central California as Torgerson opened his weekend by timing the Safety-Kleen backed No. 88 Non-Winged entry in sixth fastest in qualifying time trials.
A tough heat race saw the Medford, OR driver slip back to a sixth-place finish in his heat race and that forced him into the night’s “B”. Finishing fourth in the ‘B’, Torgerson punched his ticket into the feature event as he took the green flag from the 20th starting position.
Mired deep in the field, passing would prove to be tricky in non-Winged action, though Torgerson did work into 15th at one point during the 25-lapper. Slowly slipping back in the closing laps, Torgerson capped his first feature of the week off with a 20th place finish.
Super 600-Winged action on Thursday night went much smoother for the 19-year-old. Timing in fifth fastest in time trials, Torgerson raced to a second-place finish in his heat race.
Transferring directly into the feature event, Torgerson took the green flag aboard his Safety-Kleen entry from the sixth row, and quickly hopped into 10th when the race came to life.
Running in 10th for much of the race, Torgerson would secure a ninth-place finish coming to the finish line.
Friday night saw Torgerson return to Lemoore Speedway for another night of double duty as he opened his evening up by timing in eighth fastest in Non-Winged qualifying.
Heat race action saw Torgerson lead the way from star to to finish and transfer directly into the Night No. 2 25-lap feature event. Taking the green flag from the eighth starting position, Torgerson was solid all night as he kept his mount well inside the Top-10.
Able to pick up a trio of positions over the course of the race, Torgerson capped the feature event off with a fifth-place finish.
Super 600 Winged action was equally as good for Torgerson on this night. Mirroring his Non-Wing qualifying effort, Torgerson timed in eighth fastest before tallying a second place run in his heat race.
Moving into the feature, Torgerson put his Safety-Kleen backed entry in the third row to kick off the 25-lap affair.
Getting off to a quick start, Torgerson worked his way into third as he battled up front for most of the feature event.
Bringing the curtain down on the final preliminary night feature event of the weekend, Torgerson’s third place finish was good enough to lock him into the Saturday night feature event.
Saturday’s Cal Cup Championship night saw Torgerson lock directly into both features following preliminary night racing action.
Lining up 11th in the Non-Winged ‘A’, Torgerson kept his machine well inside the Top-10 as he worked into eighth. Lap 35 saw issues arise for Torgerson as he would then be relegated to the back of the field. Going to the back for the final five laps, Torgerson ultimately ended his Non-Winged Cal Cup with a 16th place finish.
In Super 600 Winged action, Torgerson rolled off of the starting grid from the ninth spot in the 40-lap finale. When the race went green, he wasted no time climbing into the Top-10 as he quickly assumed the seventh position before settling into ninth on lap 13.
Battling for eighth at times in the race, Torgerson would slip back to ninth on lap 38 before powering back to eight, where he would finish, on the 39th lap.
ON TAP: Austin Torgerson will be idle this weekend before returning to action at Delta Speedway next weekend.
