PETERSEN MEDIA- As Ryan Bernal continues to get a handle on Winged Sprint Car racing, he is not backing down from the competition. Taking on California’s two premier traveling series’ over the weekend, Bernal picked up a sixth place finish with the Civil War Series on Friday night before an 11th place effort with the King of the West Series on Saturday night during the Howard Kaeding Classic.
“I thought it was a good weekend for our team as we took on California’s best in Winged Sprint Car racing,” Bernal said. “Friday I thought went well and Saturday I couldn’t find much speed, but did have some fun throwing sliders.”
Opening the Fifth Annual Howard Kaeding Classic up on Friday night with the Civil War Series presented by Flowmaster, Bernal would time his Metal Works/Keizer Wheels/S&S Automotive No. 56 machine in 10th fastest and line up on the front row of his heat race.
Getting the jump on Jonathan Allard, Bernal would fend off the veteran driver, as he picked up the win and moved his machine into the evening’s Dash where a sixth place finish would put him in the third row for the feature.
A very rough and narrow racing surface yielded any opportunity to make big moves, as many drivers navigated the speedway carefully as several ruts had developed through the night.
Racing wheel-to-wheel with Bud Kaeding and Jonathan Allard much of the night, Bernal would close Friday night with a sixth place finish.
Coming back on Saturday night to race with the King of the West Series for the HK Classic finale, the Hollister, CA product would time in eighth fastest as he raced to a fourth place finish in his heat race.
Track prep prior the feature event made for an extremely fast opening half of the race, as track officials successfully kept the track from taking rubber during the 30-lap feature event.
From his 12th place starting spot, Bernal would struggle at times as he fought for a spot inside the Top-10. Battling DJ Netto late in the race, Bernal would close out his HK Classic weekend with a 12th place effort.
“I have an extremely hard working team, and they busted their butts both nights, and I really appreciate everything they do,” Bernal added.
