Bernal Has Big Weekend with Mike Phulps Motorsports

PETERSEN MEDIA- Getting back to action with wings bolted to his Mike Phulps Motorsports No. 56, Ryan Bernal would have a big weekend that saw him run second with the Ocean Sprints on Friday night before mounting a charge from 10th to second with the King of the West Sprints on Saturday night.
“My guys worked so hard all weekend, and It is great to pick up a couple of second place finishes in the winged car against some pretty stout competition,” Ryan Bernal said.
Checking in at the Ocean Speedway on Friday night in Watsonville, CA, Bernal would time the Metal Works/Keizer Wheels/DMI backed No. 56 entry in second quickest in time trials before finishing third in his heat race.
Moving into the Dash, the Hollister, CA pilot would pick up the win and place his potent machine on the front row for the 30-lap feature event. Starting alongside Justin Sanders, Bernal would slide back to the second spot, but a slew of caution flags would hamper the race’s early goings.
When things settled down and the race got into a flow, Bernal would work on Sanders as the duo raced in tight proximity for much of the night. Finally getting into the lead late in the race, Bernal looked strong out front and poised to pick up his first career win at his home track.
Taking the white flag as the race leader, Bernal would check up just slightly as he approached a lapped car and Sanders would sneak around him only to see Bernal reclaim the lead off of turn two.
The final corner would see Bernal drift up the track just enough to open the door for Sanders and he would take the checkered flag with a second place finish.
Bolting the 410ci power plant into the frame rails of the MPM entry, Bernal and company would make the trip to the Placerville Speedway to battle the King of the West 410’s.
Timing in 10th fastest, Bernal would finish third in his heat race and find himself in the fifth row for the 30-lap feature event.
Slowly working his way forward, Bernal would come alive during the second half of the race. Taking a liking to the bottom, Bernal would become a factor in the final 10-laps.
Getting by DJ Netto to take over the third spot on the 19th lap, Bernal would then race his way by Colby Copeland to take over second on the 26th circuit.
Once in second, Bernal began cutting into Bud Kaeding’s lead, and would simply run out of laps as he recorded a second place finish during his first KWS start at the ¼ mile bullring.
“John, Kerry, and Mike worked their butts off all weekend, and it shows with our results,” Bernal added. “It was a great weekend for this team and I am excited for some big races coming up.
