Bernal Sixth at Vermeil Finale after Saturday Heartbreak

PETERSEN MEDIA- Two nights of King of the West action at Calistoga Speedway over the weekend saw Ryan Bernal flirt with his first series victory on Saturday night only to have tire issues derail him before running sixth during Sunday’s Louie Vermeil Classic finale.
“Saturday night was a heartbreaker having an issue while leading,’ Ryan Bernal said. “We really had a solid night going. Sunday night we were good again, and just faded a little towards the end and ended up sixth. Thanks to everyone for all of their hard work.”
Kicking ’The Louie’ off on Saturday night, Bernal timed in 6th quickest in time trials before picking up a second place finish in his heat race. Moving into the Dash, the Hollister, CA driver would pick up a second place finish and find himself on the front row of the feature event alongside Chase Johnson.
When the race came to life on the slick surface, Bernal would slip back to third as Dominic Scelzi was able to get by. Chasing after Scelzi, Bernal would come to life at the race’s halfway point as he would retake the second position, and then drive by Johnson and take over the race lead.
Looking very strong out front, Bernal’s right rear would expire with just six laps to go in the race, and it would essentially end his night.
Bouncing back and returning to action on Sunday night for the final night at the Louie Vermeil Classic, Bernal would time in ninth fastest in time trials and pick up a heat race win. Again, qualifying for the Dash, Bernal would finish fourth and find himself in the second row for the 25-lap feature event.
Hanging in the Top-Five for much of the race, Bernal would battle the likes of Scelzi, Kaeding, and Golobic as they all jockeyed for position.
Slipping back a couple of positions in the closing laps, Bernal would close his weekend out with a sixth place finish in the Louie Vermeil Classic feature event.
“I really wish we could have pulled Saturday night off, it just wasn’t in the cards,” Bernal said. “Again, thanks to Paul Baines, and all the guys who work on this things. Also, big thanks to Tarlton family for continuing to have me driver for them and compete with the KWS week in and week out.”
