PETERSEN MEDIA- In what is his first season aboard a winged sprint car, Ryan Bernal and his Mike Phulps Motorsports team took on the daunting task of heading to Knoxville, IA and competing in both the 360ci and 410ci Knoxville Nationals.
“It was a very tough trip, but we knew it was going to be tough going into it,” Bernal said. “I am very proud of my team’s effort, and very thankful to have had such a great opportunity.”
Coming off of a D to C transfer effort in the 360 Nationals, the Hollister, CA pilot would then set his focus on the 410ci portion of the Nationals.
Getting off to a rough start at the Capitani Classic, Bernal would make some adjustments, and work his way forward during the C, as he finished 10th in his first 410ci racing action on the famed Knoxville Raceway.
Coming back to the speedway on Thursday night for his qualifying attempt for the Knoxville Nationals, Bernal would struggle a bit as he found himself in the fifth row of the night’s C Main event.
After a pair of poor time trial efforts, Bernal again raced well on the historic ½ mile as he was able to work his way up to the third spot and move into the Thursday night B Main event at the Knoxville Nationals.
Starting 23rd in the 12-lap affair, Bernal again was able to move forward as he continued to hit his marks as he raced his way to a 16th place finish.
Making his way back to the Knoxville Raceway for the Friday night program, Bernal would get the Ohsweken Speedway/Rockwell Security/Metal Works No. 56 machine timed in 35th fastest.
Heat race action would prove terminal for Bernal and his rookie attempt at the Knoxville Nationals as he would have issues under the hood getting into turn one.
“It was disappointing to not be able to come back on Saturday, but it is part of it,” Bernal added. “It was a huge learning experience for my team and myself and I think we will be much better the next time we come out.”
Bernal and the Mike Phulps Motorsports team would like to thank Keizer Wheels, DMI, S&S Automotive, King Racing Products, Metal Works, Hoosier Racing Tires, Core Power, ART Chassis, Tri-L Mandarin Ranch, Tel-Tac, Willwood, Joe Hunt Magnetos, Permatex, Alan Kaiser Construction, Outlaw Graphics, BR Motorsports, FK Rod Ends, STIDA, Rockwell Security, ButlerBuilt, GoScope, 4 Alarm Promotions, and Dean Dealy Motorsports for their support during the 2014 season.
