PETERSEN MEDIA- Continuing to make the adjustment to winged sprint car racing, Ryan Bernal and his Mike Phulps Motorsports team were in action over the weekend as they took to the Ocean Speedway where Bernal finished third, as well as the Calistoga Speedway where he would finish 10th.

“I feel like I am starting to get the hang of this winged stuff,” Bernal said.  “Ocean was tough, and I ran third to some guys with a ton of laps on the track, and Calistoga is tricky in itself, but my team is pretty happy with the weekend.”

Friday night saw Bernal make his third career Ocean Sprints presented by Taco Bravo start, and with 21 cars in the pit area, Bernal got his Mike Phulps Motorsports No. 56 machine timed in seventh fastest before picking up a third place finish in heat race action.

As the feature event got underway, Bernal found himself in quite a battle with Justin Sanders, as the duo battled for the runner up spot, with race leader Tommy Tarlton, breaking away.

Getting the spot at one time, Bernal would slip back to the third spot, as Sanders was able to get by following a restart late in the race. Working around the ‘Cowboy Up’ track, Bernal was able to hang on and land on the podium to close out the night.

Saturday night saw Bernal and his team head to the Calistoga Speedway, as Bernal battled the Civil War Series presented by Flowmaster.

Making his first ever appearance at the track with a wing attached to his car, Bernal would kick start his night by timing in 11th quickest.

Form the third row of his heat race, Bernal would take some time adapting to the track, and would finish in the fifth spot, putting him in the fifth row for the 25-lap feature event.

On the extremely slick surface, Bernal would lose the handle on his mount early in the feature event, but would settle down after restarting at the tail end of the field, and work his way back to a 10th place finish at the stripe.

“It was good to get in the winged car for a couple of races, and continue to get comfortable,” Bernal added. “I still have some work to do, but my guys gave done a great job helping me along the way.”

Bernal and the Mike Phulps Motorsports team would like to thank Keizer Wheels, DMI, S&S Automotive, King Racing Products, Metal Works, Hoosier Racing Tires, Core Power, ART Chassis, Tri-L Mandarin Ranch, Tel-Tac, Willwood, Joe Hunt Magnetos, Permatex, Alan Kaiser Construction, Outlaw Graphics, BR Motorsports, FK Rod Ends, STIDA, Rockwell Security, ButlerBuilt, GoScope, 4 Alarm Promotions, and Dean Dealy Motorsports for their support during the 2014 season.
