PETERSEN MEDIA: A change in plans last week saw Blake Carrick make a handful of Sprint Car starts in his native California with tracks running special shows for the Fourth of July holiday, and in the end Carrick is pleased with the progress and is looking forward to this Friday night.
“It was a good weekend of getting a lot of laps in the sprint car,” Blake Carrick said. “We made a last minute change and decided to stay home and run in California and I had some fun and am thankful for the team we have put together.”
Carrick kicked his weekend off with the Sprint Car Challenge Tour at Placerville Speedway during the Salute To The Fans just over a week ago where he would time his CVC/Cemex/Interstate Oil machine in seventh fastest in his qualifying group.
Lining up seventh in his heat race, the young gasser from Lincoln, CA would make some nice moves against some veteran drivers as he carved his way up to a fourth place finish which transferred him directly into the 35-lap feature event.
Having issues in the feature event, Carrick would end up tallying a 22nd place finish after retiring on the 20th lap.
Sunday saw Carrick and company return to action with the Sprint Car Challenge Tour as the series took to Petaluma Speedway where Carrick was able to make one of his first career starts.
On a surface that was a polar opposite from Saturday night, Carrick would again time in seventh quickest in his qualifying group which would again put him in the seventh starting position for his heat race.
With the surface extremely tough to pass on as it was heavy and hooked up, Carrick would end up finishing eighth which would force him into the 15-lap ‘B’ Main. With the surface still tough to make up ground on, Carrick would turn in 15 strong laps but his night would come to an end as he finished eighth in the semi.
The 4th of July saw a return trip to Placerville Speedway for a weekly point show tabbed as the 4th of July Spectacular. In front of an absolute monster crowd, Carrick would continue to get comfortable on the ¼ mile bullring as he timed his No. 38b machine in 13th quickest in qualifying time trials.
Finishing seventh in his heat race, Carrick would move into the 25-lap finale where he would line his machine up in the 17th starting position. On another slicked off racing surface, the name of the game for Carrick would be continuing to make laps and get comfortable in what was just his 7th start in a sprint car.
Battling a mix of young and veteran drivers on the slick surface, Carrick would pick up a couple of positions in the feature event as he would keep his nose clean and close his week out with a 15th place finish.
“With each race I get more comfortable and I am able to keep pushing myself,” Carrick said. “I am looking forward to returning to Watsonville this weekend and trying again.”
