PETERSEN MEDIA: During the Turnpike Challenge in Oklahoma City, OK, Blake Carrick found himself in quite the position, piloting a potent Keith Kunz Motorsports midget for the first time against a stout field.
“It was a ton of fun to make my midget debut, and it was truly and honor to work with the best in the business,” Blake Carrick said.
Following a day of practice, Blake Carrick kicked things off by lining the Walker Performance Filtration/TRD/Spike Chassis entry up in the third row of his heat race.
On a extremely fast and hooked up racing surface, the Lincoln, CA youngster would get off to a good start as he earned a fourth place finish.
Moving into the semi, Carrick would line up in the fifth row as he aimed for one of five transfer positions that were up for grabs. Continuing to learn and acclimate to the new cars, Carrick showed no fear as he got his elbows up. Working his way forward, Carrck became a factor for the final transfer position but would come up short as his night ended with a seventh place finish.
Back in action on Saturday night for another tilt with a stacked POWRi field, Carrick would find himself in the third row of his heat race with passing points again being crucial.
An extremely racy surface would be offered up to the teams and drivers on this night, and Carrick was able to flex his muscle a little as he worked up to finish third and just miss out on a transfer into the feature event.
Making his way into the semi again, Carrick would find himself on the front row of the race. Looking for hold onto one of the five transfer positions, Carrick would go toe to toe with some stiff competition, as he held strong inside the top-five.
In the race’s closing laps, Carrick would take a liking to the top side, but a slider for the final transfer position would dash the youngsters hopes of moving to the ‘A’ as he finished sixth.
“I have to thank Keith and Pete, as well as all my teammates for helping me adapt and figure things out,” Carrick added. “Again, what a great weekend and what an opportunity.”
Aside from the midget, Carrick was also at the helm of a micro all weekend long as well.
Friday night saw him garner a second place finish in his heat race. Moving into the semi, Carrick would start and finish in the second position and punched his ticket into the feature event.
Having some issues in the ‘A’, Carrick would be scored in the 17th spot officially.
Back in it on Saturday night, Carrick would line up second in his heat race, but a spin would relegate him to an eighth place finish.
Moving into the Last Chance Showdown, Carrick would have his work cut of for himself as he took the green flag from the 13th starting position.
Going for it, the Californian would pick up a handful of positions as his night came to a close with an eighth place finish in the semi.
