Blake Carrick Hard Charges to Second Place Finish at HK Classic

PETERSEN MEDIA: After taking last week off, Blake Carrick returned to action in a big way over the weekend. Heading to Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, CA for the Howard Kaeding Classic, Carrick charged from 18th to fifth on Friday night in Taco Bravo action before a 12th to 2nd run with the King of the West/NARC Series on Saturday.

“It was fun to run through the field both nights, but if I could have timed in a little better, it would have made things much easier on us,” Blake Carrick said. “Huge thanks to my guys for their hard work over the course of the weekend.”

The weekend opened up on Friday night with the Lincoln, CA driver timing the CVC/Cemex/Interstate Oil backed No. 38B in 18th fastest in qualifying time trials.

Lining up fifth in heat race competition, Carrick’s run to third successfully locked him into the 30-lap feature event where he rolled off of the starting grid from the 18th starting position.

As the race went green, much of the field went to work on the high side of the speedway, but Carrick and a few others had a different idea as they ran the bottom. Carrick was stuck to the thin strip of moisture on the bottom of the speedway and used it to work his way forward.

Cracking the Top-10 at the halfway point of the 30-lap affair, Carrick continued to work his way forward as he moved into eighth on the 16th lap. Continuing to work the bottom, Carrick made his move into the Top-Five coming to the white as he capped the opener off with a run from 18th to fifth.

Putting the 410ci power plant in for Saturday’s KWS/NARC show, Carrick nearly matched Friday’s qualifying effort as he timed in 16th quickest on this night.

As the last car to make the heat race inversion, Carrick lined up on the front row and wired the field as he picked up the win and punched his ticket into the HK Classic finale.

Taking the green flag from 12th on this night, Carrick again went right to the bottom once the feature event came to life. Carrick worked into the Top-10 in just four laps, and powered his way into the Top-Five by lap 13.

With a very strong car under him, Carrick kept his left side tires glued to the moisture around the infield berm as he worked into fourth on the 15th lap.

Taking over third on lap 17, Carrick was able to dip under Joel Myers Jr on the 21st lap and quickly begin pressuring Justin Sanders for the lead while they duo dealt with slower cars.

In the closing laps, Carrick would pull alongside Sanders to challenge for the lead, but traffic made things tricky and Carrick ultimately ended up with a second place finish.

“We had a couple of shots at the race lead late in the ‘A’, but battling Sanders in traffic was tough,” Carrick said. “It was a great result for us, and hopefully we can continue to be fast at the Forni this weekend.”

Blake Carrick would like to thank CVC, Cemex, Interstate Oil, Conti, Harris and Sloan, Emerald, Timberworks Construction, Hanson Truss, Eddie’s Lincoln Automotive, Kaeding Performance, and Arai for their continued support

ON TAP: Carrick will be back in action on Saturday in Placerville, CA.
