PETERSEN MEDIA: Battling his brother for the Marysville Raceway point championship, Carson Hammes heads into Saturday night with a 15 point advantage after enduring a DNF at this past Saturday night’s event.
With 24 cars on hand at Marysville Raceway for the second to last points event of the season, Hammes entered the night with the point lead and his closest competitor being his older brother, Dawson.
Getting off to a great start in qualifying time trials, the young Hammes was on the hammer as he timed the Movement Brewing/STS Farming/All About Fire Protection backed No. 56C mount in second fastest overall.
Lining up in the second row of his heat race, Hammes finished third which was good enough to lock him into the redraw based on his qualifying efforts. Pulling the five, Hammes lined up in the third row of the feature event as he looked to give himself breathing room heading into this coming Saturday’s season finale at the track.
When the race came to life, Hammes settled into fourth when he spent much of the race, as behind him his older brother was moving through the field after an opening lap incident.
Continuing to run well in the Top-5, things got interesting as the laps clicked down. Moving into third on the race’s 18thlap, Hammes continued to work and get better as he then took over the second position on the 20th lap.
Chasing after race long leader, Peter Paulson, disaster hit the youngster on the 22nd lap as a mechanical failure caused him to slow and ultimately end his night while running second, and just three laps from the finish.
Looking like he may lose several points to his brother as his night came to an end, trouble also struck Dawson a lap later and the duo officially finished 13th and 14th with the championship up for grabs on Saturday night.
“We are all looking forward to a fun night this week,” Carson Hammes said. “It is a testament to everyone that supports us that we are both in a good position. Thank you to my family, and all of the friends and sponsors that always have our back.”
Hammes Motorsports would like to thank Movement Brewing, STS Farming, All About Fire Protection, Summit Partners Burbank Agency, Escalera Inc., Harper Inc., Rock Crushing Solutions, Shane Matthews Transport, and Ace Attorney Services for their continued support.
BY THE NUMBERS: Races: 14, Wins: 2, Top 5’s: 5, Top 10’s: 6
