PETERSEN MEDIA- Saturday night looked like it just may be the night for Colby Copeland and the Econo Lube-n-Tune & Brakes No.x1jr team. Dominating much of the feature event at Petaluma Speedway, a late restart would see Copeland lose the top spot and end up finishing in the second spot.
“It was really a good night for our team, and I thought we had that one,” Copeland said. “It felt good to run up front, but I am disappointed we could not close the deal like my team deserved.”
A day filled with brilliant sunshine and warm temperatures, Copeland would open round four of Sprint Car Challenge Tour action up by timing the Econo Lube-n-Tune & Brakes/CRV Carbon Solutions backed No. x1jr entry in second fastest in his qualifying group.
On a tricky surface in heat race action, the Roseville, CA product would finish in the fourth spot, which transferred him into the feature event. Based on his overall qualifying time, Copeland would also earn a spot in the night’s Dash.
Scheduled to start in the second row, Copeland would move up to the front row after the driver in front of him was penalized for a false start. Finishing second in the shootout, Copeland would line up on the front row of the 40-lap feature event.
Having success at Petaluma Speedway in previous years, Copeland would mash the throttle when the green was displayed to the field and jump out to the early lead. Out in front, Copeland put on a clinic on the rough and tumble Petaluma gumbo.
Finding traffic early and often, Copeland would feel pressure from Willie Croft at times, but was able to keep his biggest threat at bay.
On the 33rd lap, Copeland would get tight on the exit of turn four, and it would result in him bobbling enough to let Croft squeeze by and take over the top spot. Copeland was not having it though, as he would answer the call on the 35th lap and reassume the race lead.
Taking the white flag in the race lead, Copeland’s biggest fear on this night would come to fruition, as the yellow lights would flicker as he came down the back stretch.
Lining up in double file formation for a green-white-checkered finish, Copeland would see Croft get the jump on him when the race resumed, and he would now be in the second spot. Trying to get back around Croft on the final lap, Copeland would come up short and end his night in the second spot.
“We had a car that was good enough to win, but circumstances late changed the race a little bit, and we came up short,” Copeland added. “These guys have gotten this car better and better each night out, and it has me really excited for Stockton Dirt Track in a few weeks.”
Copeland and F&F Racing would like to thank Econo Lube-n-Tune & Brakes, and CRV Carbon Solutions for their support in 2017.
