Copeland Stout at Silver Cup

PETERSEN MEDIA- Having a bit of tough luck during his first race of the year with Antaya Motorsports a couple of weeks back in Marysville, Colby Copeland and crew headed to Chico, CA over the weekend to take part in the Silver Cup and made some noise by way of a second place finish on Friday night, before a late incident took what looked like a win away in turn four coming to the checkered on Saturday night.

“What a heart breaker Saturday night was,” Colby Copeland said. “We had a really good car Friday and Saturday night, and I can’t wait to get back in this Antaya Motorsports car.”

The two-night affair at Silver Dollar Speedway kicked off on Friday night. Copeland would get off to a bit of a tough start as he timed the Good Guys Rod and Custom Association/Fuel Curve/Fire Protection Management backed entry in 11th quickest.

Finishing third in his heat race, the Roseville, CA pilot would take the green flag for the Friday night feature event form the ninth starting position on a track that stayed hooked up and fast through much of the night.

Despite the conditions, Copeland looked very sporty aboard his Trevor Canales prepared entry. Making it happen from the fifth row, Copeland was able to weave through the field and tally a second place finish at the stripe.

Looking for a little more during Saturday night’s finale, Copeland would come out swinging as he was able to time the Antaya Motorsports No. 16a entry in fifth fastest in time trials.

Running second in his heat race, Copeland would move into the nightly redraw where the one pill would place him on the pole for the 30-lap Silver Cup feature event.

With the start of the race being slowed for a wreck, Copeland would lead the first lap of the race, until falling back to second for a hand full of laps. Storming back to the lead on the ninth lap, Copeland looked very good out front as he began breaking away from the field.

Continuing to lead the way, Copeland looked well on his way to his first victory of the season until the caution flag waived with just two laps to go in the race and bunched the field back up.

When the field came back to life, Copeland continued to hold strong out front as he took the white flag as the race leader.

As the lead duo raced hard into turns one and two contact would ensue, but Copeland would endure it and escape with the race lead.

Heading into turns three and four, Copelands machine would bicycle and get upside down with the checkered flag in sight, and Copeland would end up officially being scored 10th.

“When the contact happened, something felt really off about our car,” Copeland said. “Going into turn three it was really unstable and started hopping around and it got upside down. I hate it for my guys. We are really fast right now and I have to thank Trevor and Larry for all their hard work.”

Antaya Motorsports would like to thank Good Guys Rod and Custom Association, Fuel Curve, Fire Protection Management, Inc.,  and Kaeding Performance for their support in 2018.
