PETERSEN MEDIA: Heading to the Marysville Raceway for a 360ci start on Saturday night, Justyn Cox out dueled Justin Sanders to pick up his first win of the season at the track, and his third overall in 2015.
“It was a tough track, and you really had to be on your game with how rough it was,” Cox said. “I haven’t been very good on the heavy and rough stuff this year, so it was nice to get a win on a tricky surface.”
Timing the Berco Redwood/Berry Lumber/Trex No. 31c machine in third fastest in time trials, Cox would pick up a third place finish during his heat race as he played it safe on an extremely rough surface.
Pulling the four in the re-draw, Cox would grid the field in the second row for the 25-lap feature event, but a spin on the opening lap by the front row starter would put Cox on the front row alongside Kenny Allen.
When the race came to life on the restart, it was Cox jumping out to the early lead as he kept Allen and Justin Sanders at bay for the nine laps of the feature event. In lapped traffic, Cox would make contact with another competitor and it would allow Sanders to take over the command of the race as Cox would then flank the new leader.
Over the next six laps, Cox would hound Sanders and got the opening in turns one and two he was looking for as he raced back into the lead on the 15th lap as he worked around a rough and tumble surface.
A restart with six laps to go gave Cox open track, but he would find himself at the tail end of the field in just three laps. With Sanders on his rear bumper, Cox would make a couple of daring moves in traffic as he would go on to pick up his third win of the 2015 season.
“Justin Sanders has been tough here, and it was fun battling with him,” Cox added. “I really have to thank my team for giving me a great car. We head to the Midwest soon, so hopefully we can continue to run well and make CA proud.”
