Croft 4th at Sills Classic in Stockton, CA
PETERSEN MEDIA- Making his way to Stockton Dirt Track on Saturday night for the Jimmy Sills Classic, Willie Croft would have a really strong night as he picked up a pair of heat race wins before charging his way forward to finish fourth in the feature event.
“We took advantage of an open show on Saturday night to play with some things, and try some things, and they seemed to work pretty well,” Willie Croft said. “We would have liked to have been a few spots better, but a pretty sound night for our team.”
Running a twin-heat format, Croft would line his Holey Smokes BBQ/ButlerBuilt/Brown and Miller backed No. 29 entry up sixth in the first heat. On a slick Stockton Dirt Track surface, Croft would go to the high, scary side of the speedway and waste little time getting to the front. Getting the lead in the final couple of laps, Croft would earn valuable points by bagging the win.
Gridding the field from fourth in his second heat, Croft got to the front even faster as a couple of big moves saw him overtake the lead within the race’s first lap. Grabbing another win, Croft was safely in the Dash where the two-pill put him on the front row.
Having a little misfortune, Corft would get off the racing surface heading down the backstretch and it would relegate him to a fifth place finish, placing him fifth on the starting grid for the 35-lap feature event.
On a surface that proved to be challenging to make up ground, Croft would search around the speedway as he would get up into fifth after falling back early.
Working on Kyle Offill for much of the second half of the race, Croft would use a green-white-checkered restart to get by the driver and close his night with a fourth place finish.
“It was good to try some things out,” Croft said. “We start to get really busy here, so to have some confidence going, and some things ironed out is good. Thanks to my guys for all their work, and our partners for all of their continued support.”
