Dawson Hammes Competes at First Gold Cup Race of Champions and Earns Top 360ci Honors

PETERSEN MEDIA: Growing up in nearby Marysville, CA counting the days until he could compete against the World of Outlaws during the annual Gold Cup, Dawson Hammes finally got that opportunity this past weekend and made the most of it as he was the highest finishing 360ci powered car during the event.

“For us taking our 360ci and racing against the Outlaws and some of the best in California, I was really happy with how our weekend went,” Dawson Hammes said. “To race into our preliminary night feature event, and then make the ‘B’ during the finale and end up being the highest finishing 360ci at the event is pretty cool for our first time at the Gold Cup.”

Hammes kicked his Gold Cup Race of Champions off on Thursday night as he timed the Voodue Company/Movement Brewing/STS Farming backed No. 55D entry in 24th quickest in qualifying time trials.

Lining up on the pole of his heat race, Hammes went to school against some of the best in the country as he slipped back to a sixth-place finish and just narrowly missed out on the direct transfer into the feature event.

Going into the ‘B’, Hammes lined up in the fourth position as he chased after one of the four transfer positions into the feature event. Holding down fourth in the early goings of the 12-lap race, Hammes would give himself some insurance as he got into third late and successfully punched his ticket into the feature event.

Taking the green flag from the 23rd starting position, Hammes was focused on making laps and getting more acclimated to Silver Dollar Speedway as it is a venue he hasn’t competed on much over the last couple of seasons.

Learning the track as best as he could and seeing what some other seasoned veterans do around the Silver Dollar Speedway surface, Hammes capped his night off with a 21st place finish.

Becoming a spectator on Friday night as the second half of the field ran their preliminary night, Hammes returned to the seat for Saturday night’s finale as he lined up 10th in his heat race.

From his fifth row starting spot, the Marysville, CA driver was able to pick up a few crucial positions as his seventh-place finish put him in the Saturday night ‘B’ Main.

Gridding the field from the sixth row in the ‘B’, Hammes would find himself battling some of the best in Sprint Car racing all vying for the final spots into the Gold Cup Race of Champions feature event.

Keeping his nose clean and continuing to run consistant laps, Hammess capped his Gold Cup off with a 13th place finish in the ‘B’ and earned the bonus for being the events to finishing 360ci powered car.

“I am really thankful that my family allows me to do this, and so many great people help us in any way that they can as well,” Hammes added.

Hammes Motorsports would like to thank Voodue Company, Movement Brewing, STS Farming, All About Fire Protection, Summit Partners Burbank Agency, Harper Inc., and Ace Attorney Services for their continued support.

ON TAP: Hammes will return to action at the Fall Nationals in Chico, CA September 29th- October 1st.
