PETERSEN MEDIA: Teaming back up with VanDyke Motorsports for the Pacific Sprint Fall Nationals in Chico, CA over the weekend, Dawson Hammes put together a great showing on Friday night that saw him finish eighth, before a lap one mishap in Saturday’s feature saw him get into the turn four wall and cut his night short.
“Aside from the misstep in Saturday’s feature, it was a great weekend for the VanDyke Motorsports team,” Dawson Hammes said. “It was a stacked field all weekend long and to pick up a Top-10 Friday, and be in a good spot to have another good finish on Saturday is a testament to everyone that worked hard all weekend long.”
With 59 cars checked into the pit area, Hammes timed the VanDyke Motorsports entry in fourth fastest in his group, which placed him in the second row of his heat race.
Battling with Shane Golobic for a Dash berth, Hammes settled for a third place finish which locked him into the ninth starting position for the 30-lap opening night feature event.
On an extremely hooked up and fast racing surface, Hammes slipped back when the race came to life as he found himself as far back as 12th. Keeping his composure, Hammes used an early restart to propel himself back into the Top-10 as he was up into eighth on the 10th lap.
Continuing to work his way forward after the slow start, the Marysville, CA driver took over the seventh position at the race’s halfway point. Battling hard to get into sixth, Hammes lost a spot on the 19th lap as he fell back eighth.
Holding strong in the Top-10, Hammes closed the night out with an eighth-place finish.
Returning to Sliver Dollar Speedway on Saturday night, Hammes again got off to a strong start as he timed in fifth fastest in his qualifying group with a robust 62 cars packed into the pit area.
Going from fifth to third in his heat race, Hammes again was securely in the feature event as he took the green flag from the 11th starting position.
Hammes’ night was cut short however, as caught the curb wrong in turns three and four and it resulted in his car spinning around and making hard contact with the with four wall.
“It was a bummer to end our weekend like that, but I had so much fun until that point, and Evan and Harley put a fast car under me each time we hit the track,” Hammes added. “I want to thank them again for a great opportunity as well as my parents, Carson, Ally, Dennise and Josh, for all of their help and support.”
Hammes Motorsports would like to thank Movement Brewing, STS Farming, All About Fire Protection, Summit Partners Burbank Agency, Harper Inc., and Ace Attorney Services for their continued support.
