PETERSEN MEDIA: Slated to make his first start with Harley VanDyke and the VanDyke Motorsports No. 5H on Saturday night in Maryville, CA, an early fall weather system washed those plans away. Thinking their weekend was scrapped, Hammes and team got wind of a last-minute race scheduled at Merced Speedway, and made the trip south and ended up finishing sixth.
“First and foremost, I want to thank Harley VanDyke and Evan Holsclaw for the opportunity to run for them,” Dawson Hammes said. “Luckily we got wind of Merced Speedway adding a race after Marysville rained out, and off we went.”
With 13 cars making the trip to Merced Speedway as 360 and 410 races slated for Kings Speedway in Hanford, CA were also cancelled, Hammes timed the Sacramento Battery Co. backed No. 5H in fourth fastest in time trials.
Lining up on the front row of his heat race, the Marysville, CA driver go the jump and went on to win his heat race as he adapted to a new car on the high banked ¼ mile bullring.
Sitting second in points after time trials and heat race action, the inversion pill ended up being a six, so it put Hammes in the third row to start the 30-lap feature event.
Getting off to a little bit of a slow start, Hammes slipped back to sixth as the field attacked the high banked bullring. Chasing after the likes of Sean Becker and Kaleb Montgomery, Hammes looked for a way into the Top-Five.
Trying what he could as the race clicked off laps quickly, Hammes ended his first night with VanDyke Motorsports in the sixth position.
“Aside from the VanDyke Motorsports team, I also want to thank my parents, Ally, Carson, Jeff Kim, and Denise for their continued support each and every weekend.”
Hammes Motorsports would like to thank Movement Brewing, STS Farming, All About Fire Protection, Summit Partners Burbank Agency, Harper Inc., and Ace Attorney Services for their continued support.
BY THE NUMBERS: Races: 21, Wins: 1, Top 5’s: 7, Top 10’s: 13
ON TAP: Hammes will be back in the VanDyke Motorsports entry this Friday and Saturday at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, CA for the Fall Nationals.
