The Knoxville Nationals are what every driver who straps into a winged Sprint Car dreams of winning. Over the last decade, the debate come August is who can take out perennial favorite, Donny Schatz. Over the years Schatz has been just about unbeatable at Nationals. Names that would often get brought up have been Brian Brown, Shane Stewart, Kerry Madsen, and Brad Sweet to name a few. Saturday night, Schatz was passed and then held to a second place finish during the Knoxville Nationals A Main, but it wasn’t by any of the listed names, it was by our Driver of the Week: Jason Johnson. Johnson would turn in a masterful 50-lap performance where he simply left everything he had on the Marion County 1/2 mile. He ran the race so hard, Schatz admittedly was surprised someone could keep the pace up all race long. Johnson ,who has a history of being dominant in 360ci ranks, has had a tough road the last two years since joining the World of Outlaws. After enduring a back injury at the start of the 2014 season, Johnson would work to get back in his car by the end of the season and come out strong in 2015. Having a strong showing during his Knoxville prelim night, Johnson would turn in a performance for the ages on sprint car racing’s biggest stage as he earned DOTW honors by capturing the 56th Running of the Knoxville Nationals.
