PETERSEN MEDIA- Sitting fifth in Trophy Cup points heading into the 50-lap feature event on Saturday night, Willie Croft’s bid for a third crown would be dashed after being involved in a tangle on the second lap.
“Some years are better than other’s, and unfortunately this year didn’t pan out for us,” Willie Croft said. “We had a really good car all weekend and we put ourselves in a good position in the points”
Timing in third fastest in time trials on Thursday night, the Roseville, CA driver would have a great run in his heat as he carved his way up to a third place finish.
Locking into the ‘A’, Croft would roll off from the seventh starting position. In the star studded feature event, Croft would continue to run inside the Top-10 as he capped the night with an eighth place finish.
Sitting seventh in Trophy Cup points following the opener, Croft turned in nearly an identical points performance on Friday night, as he timed in seventh fastest, and ran second in his heat race.
Moving into Friday’s feature, Croft would again tally a Top-10 finish as he finished ninth, giving him just three less points for the night than he earned on Thursday and it put him 10thin the standings heading into the finale.
A very strong start to Saturday night, saw Croft make up some serious ground as he raced to the heat race win and jumped all the way up to fifth in the standings heading into the 50-lap A Main.
Rolling off from the 16thstarting position as he sought after his third Trophy Cup title, contact on the race’s second lap would cause damage to the front of the Willie Croft Racing machine, and his Trophy Cup would come to an early end.
“It was a fun weekend, I would have liked to have mixed it up in the ‘A’, but it happens,’ Croft said. “Like I said, my guys worked extremely hard and we were pretty good all weekend long.”
