PETERSEN MEDIA- Saturday night at the annual Mark Forni Classic, Justyn Cox was in the mix early to battle for his third win at the storied event, however an early incident would see Cox get into the cushion awkwardly in turns three and four and get his machine upside down on the fifth lap.
“I absolutely hate tearing up equipment, and to tear up Cody and Mandi’s car makes me feel even that much worse,” Cox said. “It was an honest mistake working the cushion, but it still doesn’t make it any better. I hate it for the guys, we worked hard all night to get our engine running and then that happened so early in the race and I felt really good.”
With 25 cars on hand for the tracks Summer highlight, Cox got things kicked off by timing the Berco Redwood/Berry Lumber, Inc./Legacy Specialties backed No. 7c in 16th quickest.
With something amiss under the hood, the C&M Motorsports team would go to work before heat race action to see if they could right the ship. Able to make a number of tweaks to their power plant, the Clarksburg, CA driver was able to take full advantage of the front row starting position in his heat race, which would be very vital.
Able to race to the win, Cox earned a spot in the redraw where Lady Luck would ride with him during this part of the night and he would find himself with the five pill, and in the third row to start the 25-lap feature event.
Following quick track prep to try and calm the surface down as rough patches had developed over the course of the night with a smoke screen keeping the sun of the famed red dirt, the race would come to life as Cox jumped up into fourth.
Chasing after the likes of Justin Sanders, and Shane Hopkins, Cox looked very sport as he worked the thick Placerville Speedway cushion.
Continuing to ‘live and die’ by the high side, Cox would get into trouble on the fifth lap when his right rear tire would catch the berm just wrong enough in turns three and four and it would hook his machine and send him upside down. While he was quickly able to climb from the wreckage, Cox’s night would come to an end.
“It just sucks to have our night end like that with how hard everyone worked,” Cox said. “We are certainly not done though; we will be back and gunning for a win this weekend.”
The C&M Motorsports team would like to thank Berco Redwood, Barry Lumber, Inc., Legacy Specialties, Inc., Lund Construction, Anrak, Alturas Tires, Swartz Diesel, PT Shocks, Creason Enterprises, and all of their product sponsors for their continued support.
ON TAP: Cox and C&M Motorsports now return to Sprint Car Challenge Tour action on Saturday night as they head to Merced, CA.
