Forgettable Gold Cup For Croft

PETERSEN MEDIA- Willie Croft quickly pulled a tear off on the 2014 Gold Cup Race of Champions, and in fact, he can’t wait to get back to racing this weekend as he had a nightmarish weekend.

“He definitely did not go the way that I had hoped,” Croft said. “I do have to thank all of the guys that help me though. They worked their butt’s off all weekend.”

Croft’s 2014 Gold Cup kicked off on Wednesday night with the Civil War Sprint Car Series Presented By Flowmaster, and the Sacramento, CA driver stopped the clocks with the fourth quickest lap of the night.

Heat race action saw Croft battle brake issues, and as he tried to work around the slick track, he had his fair share of issues, and wound up in the B Main.

Starting on the pole of the B, Croft was simply dominant, as he rode the cushion to perfection to pick up the win, and move into the feature event, where he gridded the field from the ninth spot.

Running in the Top-10 much of the race, Croft had issues with five to go, and opted to call it a night as he pulled into the pit area, and was credited with a 20th place finish.

As the World of Outlaws rolled into town on Friday, Croft bolted his 410ci engine in his Holey Smokes BBQ/Christian Stover Foundation/ButlerBuilt No. 29 entry, and timed in 15th quickest.

Getting the jump in his heat race, Croft took command of the race, and looked to be well on his way into the Dash, until contact with the second place car caused Croft’s machine to get upset, and ultimately get upside down.

Starting third in the LCQ, Croft would work into the second spot as he chased after Rico Abreu, and would transfer to the feature event, where he started in the seventh row, and he would be credited with a 22nd place finish.

Saturday night brought the close of the three-race weekend, and Croft’s would have a tough night, as his Gold Cup ended in the C Main.

“It was just one of those tough weekend’s,” Croft said. “Unfortunately we have had too many of them this season, so hopefully with some big races coming up, we can shake it, and end our season on a high note.”
