PETERSEN MEDIA: Breaking through and scoring his first USAC West Coast 360 Series feature event of the season definitely did not come easy for Austin Liggett. Involved in a tangle on the race’s fifth lap, Liggett would tag the back of the pack where he would then work his way back forward to grab the lead late and win in dramatic fashion.

“I really have to thank my Dad my setting up the perfect car all night long, my mom for all of her help, and everyone in the work area who jumped in and lent a hand and helped get us back on the track,” Austin Liggett said.

With 19 cars checked into Santa Maria Speedway for round No. 11 of USAC West Coast 360 action, Liggett got his night started off on the right foot as he earned quick time honors aboard the Excel Environmental Services/Lucas oil/Hurst Fabrications backed No. 83 sprinter.

Taking the green flag from the second row of his heat race, the Tracy, CA gasman would have his elbows up as he raced his way to a second place finish and found himself taking the green flag from the second row to kick off the 30-lap feature event.

As the green lights flashed on, Liggett was hard on the loud pedal as he quickly jumped up into the second position and began challenging for the race’s top spot.

Lap five would see the leader dramatically slow with apparent issues but with nowhere to go Liggett would get involved in the action and come to a stop with damage to his headers.

Forced into the work area, a slew of crewmembers would go to work on the Austin Liggett Racing injury and do what they could to get him back on track. Making some cuts into his headers, Liggett would push off and join the field from the tail end.

On a very racy Santa Maria Speedway surface, Liggett was flawless from last. Able to put his machine anywhere he needed on the track, the current series point leader had a championship type performance, as he was able to soar back into the lead on the 25th lap.

Out in front, Liggett continued to showcase his talent to all on hand on this night as he won a thriller from the back which was his first USAC West Coast 360 win of the season and his second overall in 2018.

“It was a great track that really made that charge even possible,” Liggett said. “To do something like that is pretty special, and I will definitely remember this one for a long time.”

Austin Liggett Racing would like to thank Excel Environmental Services, Lucas Oil, Hurst Fabrications, Infinity Shocks, 4 Alarm Promotions, Epic Fire Apparel, and Jarrett Soares Racing for their support.

2018 BY THE NUMBERS: Races-13, Wins-2, Top 5’s-9, Top 10’s-9

ON TAP: Liggett will take this coming weekend off and has tentative plans of heading to Perris Auto Speedway on June 23rd.
