Gomes Charges to Fifth Place Finish at Mark Forni Classic

PETERSEN MEDIA- Officially in the home stretch of championship action at Placerville Speedway, Tony Gomes remained in the hunt for his first track title as he rebounded from a tough heat race and charged from 10th to 5th in the Mark Forni Classic feature event.

“It was another solid night for the C&M Motorsports team, but I just made too many mistakes and it cost us an even better finish,” Tony Gomes said. “We timed in well, but in the heat, I made a mistake and misjudged what another car was going to do and I got off the track. I couldn’t get back to fourth and it relegated us to the semi.”

Timing the Lund Construction/Anrak/Sam Rhodes backed No. 7C in third fastest in qualifying time trials, Gomes lined up in the second row of his heat race needing to finish in the top four to earn a berth in the redraw.

Issues early in the heat saw the Modesto, CA driver get up over the end of the track and it resulted in him going to the tail end of the field.

Battling hard on the slick Placerville Speedway surface, Gomes was unable to get back into one of the four transfer spots and was forced into the night’s ‘B’ Main.

Lining up on the front row of the semi, Gomes took care of business as he laid the hammer down and raced his way to the win. Picking up the win, Gomes did get his time back behind the redraw cars and lined up in the fifth row of the 25-lap feature event.

Following a track re-work prior to pushing out for the feature, Gomes got off to a nice start as he quickly moved into the seventh position. A double file restart saw Gomes on the inside lane and it was unkind to him as he shuffled back to 11thas he needed to get his elbows up again and get back to work.

Unable to make any real headway, Gomes came to life in the closing stages of the $5,000-to-win feature event. As the track started to blow back off and get slick again, Gomes surged his way forward and made a late run to fifth where he capped his night off.

“The track prep lasted a little longer than I thought, but once it got back to the slick state it was in earlier in the night we came to life,” Gomes said. “I apologize to my team for making some costly mistakes, but I’m thankful that Cody and Mandi continue to believe in me, and also want to thank John for working hard alongside Cody all night long.”

The C&M Motorsports team would like to thank Lund Construction, Anrak, Sam Rhodes, Alturas Tires, Swartz Diesel, Adrian Blanco Jewelry, Kings Meats, American Paving Systems, PT Shocks, Creason Enterprises, and all of their product sponsors for their continued support.
