PETERSEN MEDIA- David Gravel had a solid night at the Jackson Speedway Friday night that ended with him scoring a ninth place finish, and a late qualifying draw at the Knoxville Raceway on Saturday night, put him and his Roth Motorsports team in recovery mode all night.
“We started out great on Friday night with quick time, and it ended up okay with a ninth as the track took rubber, and on Saturday we went out really late for time trials, and that was not where you wanted to be,” he explained.
Picking up quick time honors on Friday night, the Watertown, CT driver scored a third place finish in heat race action, transferring his Roth Enterprises/HR Livestock Transportation/3H Cattle entry into both the Dash and the Feature Event.
Lining up sixth in the Dash, Gravel scored a seventh place finish on the very abrasive surface.
With the track taking rubber in the early stages of the race, Gravel got in the ninth spot, and was forced to stay in the rubber, as passing was extremely difficult outside of it.
Gravel would cross the stripe in the ninth spot, and head to the Knoxville Raceway on Saturday night.
With 48 cars on hand for the Mediacom Shootout at the Knoxville Raceway, the track went away during time trials, and a late draw for Gravel ended up with him timing in 34th fastest.
“There were a lot of good cars that went out around us, and we all timed in relatively similar he said, and bad qualifying is really tough to rebound from with how good everybody is with the Outlaws and at Knoxville.”
Lining up 15th in the LCS, Gravel had a strong car as he began picking off cars, and working his way toward a transfer spot, but steering issues forced him to pull of the speedway, giving him a DNF.
Opting to use a World of Outlaws provisional, Gravel tagged the rear of the field, lining up in the 25th spot.
Using the top of the speedway, Gravel was able to pick up positions through the night, and he closed his weekend out with a 20th place finish.
“It is not what we had in mind with this being the only time we come here until August, but it is part of it,” he said. “The guys worked really hard all night, and I think we did learn some stuff that will help us when we come back for the Nationals.”
The Roth Motorsports team would like to thank Roth Enterprises, HR Livestock Transportation, 3H Cattle, Mobil1, FK Rod Ends, Weld Wheels, Brown and Miller Racing Solutions, Kent Performance, Kaeding Performance, and Astro Titanium for their support in 2014.
