PETERSEN MEDIA: A one race weekend for Destiny Motorsports and David Gravel saw the Watertown, CT driver finish second on Friday night at the Dirt Track in Charlotte, NC, after a thrilling battle with Donny Schatz.
“We had a great weekend overall,” Gravel said. “It has been a work in progress for us, and it was great to put together such a strong run on Friday night.”
Getting his night started off by timing the MonDak Portables/Ft. Union Supply and Trading/Benic Enterprises No. 7 machine in fifth fastest, Gravel would work his way to second in heat race action.
Earning a spot in the dash due to his qualifying time, Gravel would line up in the fifth spot before racing his way forward to finish in the fourth spot, putting the Rick Rogers Construction/Champion Brand Lubricants/Maxim Chassis entry in the second row of the feature event.
When the race came to life, Gravel took a liking to the high side of the speedway, as he jumped into the third spot, as began his pursuit of Kraig Kinser, and Donny Schatz.
On an extremely slick racing surface, Gravel would continue to run the cushion in turns one and two, as he used the bottom in three and four, as he continued to run in the third spot.
Lapped traffic allowed Gravel to make up ground on second running Schatz, as the duo both moved in on Kinser for the race lead. A caution on the 11th lap would see Gravel slip back to the fourth spot on the restart, but another yellow on the 13th lap, would see Gravel return the favor as he moved into the third spot on ensuing restart.
On the 16th lap, Gravel was able to make his move on Kraig Kinser to take the second spot, as he then began go after Schatz who had over a three second lead with 10-laps to go.
In the second position, Gravel would noticeably cut into Schatz’s lead lap by lap, and was all over the race leader with just a few laps to go. With the leader in traffic, Gravel would give Scahtz all he could with two to go.
Giving it his all, Gravel would come up just short, as he finished in the second position.
“We had a couple shots at him,” Gravel said with a smile. “I think with a few more laps we could have had something for him (Donny Schatz) but he doesn’t give many wins away. This was the first night we made the dash, and if we can continue to do that, we will be on the podium more. I really have to thank everyone on this team for continuing to work hard.”
